Fans have been cheering for Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. since they became a couple in 2000. Like many other Hollywood couples, the two actors met on set while filming I Know What You Did Last Summer and hit it off quickly. The relationship started out simply as a friendship before growing into something so much more. Just two years after they first met, the couple decided to get married. The two enjoyed their time together before welcoming their daughter and son.
Although the couple led very public lives themselves, they were very private when it came to their family. Both Gellar and Prinze have social media accounts but choose to either not post their children or ensure they are hidden in the photo. So it’s no surprise why the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘She’s All That’ stars have established some strict rules when it comes to their kids having social media accounts. In an interview with Us Weekly in September 2021, the former Gellar revealed that she and Prinze don’t allow their children to have social media, and all the reasons why.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. want their kids to be held accountable
Famous celebrity couples have taken one of two paths when it comes to social media and general public life for their kids. Some don’t mind putting their children in the spotlight, sharing posts or videos on social media. More recently, many celebrities have decided to keep their children out of the limelight and limit what the public will see.
Sarah Michele Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are just one of the many celebrity couples who have denied their children are on social media. With their daughter Charlotte, 11, and Rocky, 9, the couple’s children are nearing the age when social media becomes an interest. Gellar explained to Us Weekly that one of the reasons they don’t have social media is because they need to understand accountability. The “Scooby-Doo” star shared, “I said it [my daughter, Charlotte] it has to be a public account because you have to be held accountable. I think my biggest problem with social media is the lack of accountability.” The actress went on to explain that she doesn’t think her kids are at the age where they can grasp the idea of accountability. Gellar wants them to stay off social media until they do.
However, Gellar has her own active Instagram account where she shares the current events of her life. And as a former WWE writer, Prinze Jr. uses social media for his podcast, Wrestling with Freddie.
Sarah Michelle Gellar likened social media to a face tattoo
Interests change with time and age. Celebrities who are constantly posting on social media share a specific point in their life that they may regret or feel some kind of change in the future. Sarah Michelle Gellar wants her children to understand this before they become part of the social media world. In an interview with People, the actress likened social media to an inexplicable face tattoo given its permanence.
The Cruel Intentions actress explained, “At this age, there’s nothing better than Paw Patrol. And now you are 10 years old and you still have them [Paw Patrol] Tattoos on your face and it’s not even who you are anymore… This is a very difficult concept for young children to grasp.
However, with exciting platforms like TikTok and BeReal, kids are becoming more and more interested in social media. Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s children are no different, and the actresses shared how their children have expressed to their parents that they consider their home the “strictest household.” Instead, Gellar and Prinze Jr. choose to let their children participate in more productive activities, such as earning their stripes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
