Why Billie Eilish wasn’t a fan of her blue hair

Billie Eilish may only have been on the music scene for a short time, but she’s already had her fair share of transformations.

The You Should See Me In A Crown hitmaker is notorious for wearing loose-fitting clothes. “What I like about just dressing like I’m 800 sizes bigger than me is that it doesn’t give anyone the ability to judge what your body looks like,” she told Vogue Australia in 2019. Eilish insisted at the time that she wanted “layers and layers and layers” and stated she wanted to be “mysterious”. However, in June 2021, the Grammy-winning actress opted for a more Hollywood glam-inspired look for her cover shoot for British Vogue, where she wore fewer layers than usual. “It’s all about what’s good for you,” the singer told the magazine. In a discussion with NME a year later, Eilish explained that she went for a drastically different image because the public “only thought of me in one dimension and I didn’t like that.” She continued, “I wanted to have reach and feel desirable and feel feminine and masculine — and I wanted to prove that to myself.”

Clothing isn’t the only thing Eilish has experimented with, as her constant hairstyle and color changes proved she’s a chameleon. Although, despite all the shades she’s sported, she regrets dying her tresses blue.

Blue is Billie Eilish’s least favorite color

Of the many hair colors Billie Eilish has rocked, she’s very confident to say that blue hair wasn’t a favorite of hers. While answering fan questions for BuzzFeed while surrounded by adorable puppies, Eilish was asked about the reasons for the multiple shades of blue. “I hate the color blue, it’s my least favorite colour. I don’t know how I ended up coloring them blue,” the “Bury A Friend” hitmaker said in 2019, adding, “I remember just living with it for a while during and then I realized I didn’t see that I was someone with dyed hair. I had blue hair, but I didn’t think I was someone with blue hair.

Eilish explained that she wanted to change her hair to a dark gray but didn’t know the blue was permanent and confessed that she had previously spent hours trying to get rid of the color in the salon chair.

While the singer wasn’t a fan of the phase herself, Eilish’s blue locks had such an impact on pop culture that someone dyed her hair a similar shade for an episode of Refinery29’s “Hair Me Out.”

Billie Eilish’s signature green and black hair was a wig

Even though Billie Eilish first rose to fame with blonde hair, it was still a big deal when she went back to her natural hair color during the “Happier Than Ever” era. What really shook fans, however, was when they realized that her signature green and black hair was actually a wig for a period of time. As seen in a TikTok video, Eilish made it clear to fans that it wasn’t her natural hair as she lifted the wig up from the front.

In her 2021 interview with British Vogue’s cover story, Eilish boldly stated that she has no plans to ever wear that wig again. However, the real reason for wearing the wig was explained during an Instagram Q&A via BuzzFeed. When asked why she decided to hide her blonde hair, Eilish revealed it took a full six weeks to go back to her natural color. Because of this, she had to compete in a wig at the 2020 Grammy Awards.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Eilish’s hairstylist, Lissa Renn, spoke about the surgery to go blonde again. “The process is real if you get it right. 6 weeks to get all the black out of her ends without damaging it along with her following my strict hair care regimen,” she said (via Teen Vogue), adding, “We actually have all the stages of lifting the too Color loved but the end result is it [flame emoji].”
