What we know about Charli XCX’s love life

As one of the music industry’s most prolific songwriters, it’s no surprise that Charli XCX has written songs about past relationships. While the British singer seems to keep her personal life as private as possible, she’s been open to discussing what inspires her lyrics.

After the release of her debut album, True Romance, in 2013, XCX told MusicRadar that she chose the title because the songs describe her experiences with love and romance. The ‘Beg For You’ hitmaker explained, “I’ve come to realize that you really can’t have a true romance without having all those other horrible moments of crying and thrashing… Then you have those others Moments where you’re walking on a cloud, so that’s the trade-off.”

In an interview with Renowned for Sound, XCX described the feeling of love as “schizophrenic”. She insisted she writes “emotional pop music” and envisions her songs as the color purple, explaining that they are “rich and lush and romantic.”

While XCX doesn’t flaunt their ties to the public, that doesn’t mean their friends can’t be tracked down.

Charli XCX’s ex-boyfriend directed some of her early music videos

Charli XCX has never revealed too much about her ex-boyfriends. However, during their relationship, she appeared on the red carpet with British director Ryan Andrews. As seen in the snapshot above, the couple posed together at the 2012 Elfie Hopkins premiere in London. It’s not clear when XCX and Andrews first struck up a romance, but they are known to have had a close working relationship.

In 2013, XCX spent time with Andrews while performing in New York. While Grantland was documenting her time in town, the outlet noted that she “plays with her boyfriend, the videographer Ryan.” In an October 2014 cover story with Billboard, it was revealed that Andrews had directed five of her music videos. It was also announced at the time of the story that they had split up. Still, Andrews supported his ex after she started blowing up. “So proud of @charli_xcx for her ema performance last night,” he tweeted. “All the hard work we’ve put in over the years has really paid off. She’s on fire.”

Following her relationship with Andrews, XCX dated video game producer Huck Kwong for seven years, according to The Sun. In May 2020, Charli XCX continued to gush about her relationship with Huck Kwong. While sharing a photo he took of her on Instagram, the “Boom Clap” hitmaker expressed that she feels “extremely fortunate and privileged to be in a situation where I can be with him and two others People who are very close to my heart will be quarantined. However, their relationship was not to last. Although fans have not learned of their split, it has since been revealed that XCX has moved on with fellow British musician George Daniel (pictured above, far left).

Daniel is one quarter of indie band The 1975 and previously worked with XCX on 2021’s single “Spinning” and later helped write and produce their songs “Crash” and “Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)”.
