Divorces are a daily occurrence at Bravo. If you scrutinize a few crumbling marriages and expose them to criticism, many of them don’t last. Probably the only thing more stressful than getting divorced is getting divorced on TV and then discussing it at a three-part season meetup with Andy Cohen and the rest of the world.
Who could forget Vicki Gunvalson – the first “housewife” of all time – who started the show married to Donn Gunvalson? Vicki and Donn’s relationship fell apart over the course of a few seasons until they yelled at each other in public. Not even a vow renewal could save her. They soon separated. Vicki dated a man named Brooks Ayers (who pretended to have cancer) and was then engaged and dumped by a man named Steve. All the while, Vicki kept up the constant chorus of wishing she’d stayed with Donn.
Vicki is far from the only divorcee on the network who may or may not regret it. Unfortunately, it seems like divorce is a requirement for hiring The Real Housewives. Since breakups are so often a plot point in the franchise, Nicki Swift asked our readers what divorces they saw coming from a mile away. Unlike the splits, some of the answers were surprising.
Fans had strong feelings for Bethenny Frankel
Nicki Swift asked almost 600 readers which “Real Housewife” divorce was the easiest to predict. Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy of Real Housewives of New York came in first, with more than 27% of respondents saying the marriage’s demise was predictable. Frankel and Hoppy filed in 2013, but the divorce wasn’t finalized until 2021 thanks to a very protracted custody battle, thanks to E! News. During the trial, details emerged that highlighted the ailing nature of the short-lived union. Case in point: The couple’s marriage counselor reportedly refused to work with them as it was obvious there was no saving their partnership (via Page Six).
In second place was Meghan King and Jim Edmonds with 20%, which wasn’t very surprising since they’ve both been married before and Edmonds is almost 15 years older than King. They are followed by Kenya Moore and Marc Daly with 17%. Shannon and David Beador were almost level with Ashley and Michael Darby at 12.9% and 11.71% respectively. What was surprising, however, was the couple that came last: Erika Jayne and Tom Girardi, with less than 10% of respondents saying they saw their divorce coming.
At this point, it’s unclear if Girardi and Jayne are even getting a divorce. Two years after the filing, little has been done to advance the proceedings, according to Us Weekly. Some critics (and advocates) have claimed they only filed a motion to protect assets from the legal disaster Girardi knew was imminent.
