What Jesse Spencer has been up to since he left Chicago Fire

Jesse Spencer’s exit from “Chicago Fire” in October 2021 left fans dejected. Spencer has been a staple on the NBC hit since the series premiered in 2012, playing Capt. Matthew Casey, a tough, tough firefighter who regularly put his life on the line to save and protect the citizens of Chicago.

Spencer briefly returned to the show in 2022, appearing during the Season 10 finale. But alas, it was only to fulfill the best man’s promise he made to his pal, Lt. Kelly Severide. “We begged him, begged him and offered him the moon to come back and do the finale,” co-showrunner Derek Haas told TVLine. The Chicago Fire writers left the door open to Spencer to return should he change his mind. Capt. Casey’s exit was to head into the sunset to fight the good gunfight in Portland. However, it seems highly unlikely that Casey will be waving his hose around the Windy City any time soon.

Spencer had been itching to quit for several seasons. Still, he struggled to pull the trigger and finally agreed to wait until he hit his 200th episode. “It was a difficult decision because I loved the show from the start,” the actor explained to reporters (via USA Today). “But there are other things I would like to do in the future and there is a family to take care of.” So what has Jesse Spencer been up to since leaving Chicago Fire?

Jesse Spencer’s career is down

It’s hard to imagine Jesse Spencer doing anything before or after Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med. He was synonymous with Capt. Matthew Casey after playing him for nearly a decade before throwing in the towel in 2021. However, Spencer has been keeping himself busy ever since Casey hung up his bunker gear and headed off to start over in Portland. But in real life, Spencer’s new gig is definitely not within driving distance.

The actor has returned to his native Australia to star in a new eight-part Disney+ dramedy, Last Days of the Space Age. And the show is so different from “Chicago Fire” even though an inferno or two is included. Per Collider is set in Perth, Western Australia, in the late 1970s. It brings together a Miss Universe pageant, a widespread, total blackout, and a US space station falling out of the sky and exploding on Earth.

“Against this backdrop of international cultural and political change, the marriages, friendships and futures of three families in a close-knit coastal community are tested,” says Deadline. The outlet also reports that the historical play is set to air sometime in 2023. So, aside from dodging fiery, falling space junk that explodes downward and hopping in the dark with bikini-clad beauty queens, what else has Jesse Spencer been up to since he left “Chicago Fires”?

Jesse Spencer keeps the tabloid rumor mill going

Between “Chicago Fire” and “Last Days of the Space Age,” Jesse Spencer managed to slip in a quick streak and show off his comedic skills. Spencer starred in the short film Queer Fish in God’s Waiting Room, an 11-minute adaptation of Lee Henshaw’s novel. The actor is also kicking back and enjoying married life. Spencer was once engaged to fellow “House” co-star Jennifer Morrison before the couple called it quits in 2010.

However, he finally met “The One” in 2014. Spencer married research specialist Kali Woodruff Carr in June 2020. “She’s smart, pretty and way ahead of her age. We are very happy and looking forward to moving on to the next phase of our lives,” he gushed to The Daily Telegraph.

Having started his career in Australia aged 15 – having appeared in over 460 episodes of the long-running soap opera Neighbors – it’s no surprise that Spencer has become a staple of Australia’s tabloids. The rumor mill went into overdrive after it was reported that he and Carr were about to become parents for the first time. A gossip mag claimed Carr has a baby bump and a source reportedly confirmed they were expecting it. Additionally, another source reportedly told the tab, “She made toasts TWICE…by drinking water instead of wine” (via MediaMass). Who needs a pregnancy test when you’ve got the tabloids?
