What is Sophie Turner’s natural hair color?

While playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner got to rock an array of fabulous hairstyles. Changes to Sansa’s hair often meant character development, whether learning to lead like a Lannister queen or charm like an ambitious Tyrell. And let’s not forget the goth phase she went through when she dyed her hair dark and received training in manipulation from Littlefinger.

In an interview with Refinery29, Turner shared which of Sansa’s hairstyles she loved the most. “I’ve always loved Sansa’s hair dyed black and tied back in very tight, tight French braids,” she said. “It was her own look and something that she created.” But for most of the series, Turner’s locks were a bright red hue that set her apart from the blonde Targaryens, golden-maned Lannisters, and the Starks, who didn’t during the Red Wedding died. One member of the Stark clan who joined Sansa as one of the series’ survivors was Jon Snow (Kit Harington). Turner told GQ of Harington’s raven locks: “He wakes up and of course his is great. He’s got like the perfect little pin curls.”

Turner may have been a bit jealous of those shiny locks when Sansa had to give up her luxurious lady’s abode and spend some time in the wilds of Westeros. “Around Season 5, they started asking me not to wash my hair and it was really gross,” she told InStyle. Turner also had to have her roots touched up quite often.

Sophie Turner wasn’t born a redhead, and she was initially reluctant to dye her naturally blonde hair auburn when she was cast on Game of Thrones as a teenager. “As a 13-year-old girl, of course, you’re teased mercilessly,” she told W magazine. In an interview with Vogue, she explained this reluctance by saying that she was attending school at the time and there was a stigma attached to being redheads among her classmates.

Game of Thrones hairstylist Kevin Alexander told Deadline that Turner’s hair color needed touch-ups weekly, which he used a plant-based color for. But Turner eventually went back to her roots, and after seeing her with the blonde locks of a Targaryen, some “GoT” fans feared the worst. Per Vogue, there was speculation that her character had been killed off. “People really freaked out,” Turner recalled.

Unfortunately, even bleaching her hair didn’t leave it in the best condition. “It destroyed my hair so much that I had to use a wig on ‘Game of Thrones,'” Turner told Glamour. “They wouldn’t dye me red again or my hair would have fallen out.” While the wig eliminated the need for weekly touch-ups, it brought its own pesky problems. “Wigs are very itchy, they take longer to put on, and my head gets very hot under them,” Turner told Marie Claire.

What hair color does Sophie Turner prefer?

Sophie Turner also wore red hair to play Jean Gray in two X-Men movies, and she’s a big fan of the bright color. “Having the red hair made me feel empowered because every character I’ve played that had red hair was so powerful,” she said in a 2019 Allure interview. However, she finds that her natural hair color suits her best. “But when I’m blonde it makes me feel normal and like a tomboy, which is more in line with my personality,” she told Marie Claire.

Speaking to Allure in 2018, Turner revealed she’d love to experiment with other shades, including gray and blue. Thankfully, becoming an ambassador for haircare brand Wella taught her what products to use to protect her hair from damage with every color change. That knowledge may have come in handy when she dyed her hair red again in 2021, according to Page Six. She was later seen rocking the color on the HBO miniseries The Staircase.

Turner also learned a hair health tip fit for a queen (or the lady of Winterfell). “Sleep on a silk pillowcase. It’s amazing,” she told W magazine, explaining that the luxe cover keeps hair shiny and free of those pesky tangles. “I told my fiancee [Joe Jonas]”We must get all the silk for the house. Silk sheets, silk tables,” Turner continued, showing how passionate she is about maintaining her famous mane.
