Ever since Cardi B rose to fame with 2017’s “Bodak Yellow,” she’s been engaging listeners in the catchiest way possible. Featuring iconic lines like “These expensive, those are red bottoms / Those are bloody shoes,” Cardi became the first solo female rapper to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in nearly two decades.
Since then, the Bronx-born villain has garnered nine Grammy nominations and one win despite only releasing one studio album. Needless to say, fans were pretty excited when the rapper announced in late June that she would be releasing a song in just five days. A few days later, Cardi posted the cover to her Instagram, revealing that Kanye “Ye” West and Lil Durk would be featured on the track “Hot S***.”
The latest from Cardi is finally here and the internet is buzzing. As “Hot S***” vies for song of the summer, we can’t help but wonder: What do his lyrics really mean?
Cardi B flaunts her fame
On the surface, “Hot S***” seems to present a similar theme to Cardi B’s previous hit “Bodak Yellow.” With bars like “Either way you slice it, bottom line, I’m the top b****/ New Chanel, I rock it,” Cardi makes one thing clear: While she may have been off the music scene for a while, she’s gone her talent and success went nowhere.
While the message may be fairly straight-forward, some of the clever lines require a little detective work to uncover their full meaning. In the opening lyrics, Cardi raps, “Now this is that hot turd/Jimmy Snuka from the top rope, superfly turd.” As Genius notes, Snuka was a wrestler known for his “superfly splash,” a move that would involve him falling from the top rope of the ring jumped on an opponent.
Fans also took to Twitter with their own analysis. A Twitter user made the connection between Cardi’s phrase, “Might get in the tub with all my ice on some pac s***,” and the famous 2Pac photoshoot, which saw the rapper nude in a jewelry-covered bathtub . Even those who didn’t dissect the song couldn’t resist tweeting praise for the artist. “Cardi makes her best music in her comfort zone!!!! I WANTED THAT!!!!” one post read. Despite the widespread praise for the single, Cardi revealed in an Instagram Live ahead of its release that she wasn’t entirely happy with it.
Cardi B almost canceled the release of Hot S***
It’s hard to believe that Cardi B hesitated to release what Twitter users are calling “one of the best songs.” However, in the days leading up to its release, the rapper shared his frustration with how the record was being handled. In an Instagram Live, Cardi said (via Twitter), “I wanted to cancel my release for this week because s*** isn’t being performed like it should.” not doing the damn job right.
Still, it was obvious the singer was desperate to release new music following delays caused by COVID-19 and the birth of her son. She shared that she decided to go ahead with releasing the song but would not direct a music video for it. Luckily, it seems like fans didn’t have a problem with how the song ended.
Per Billboard, the rapper said on Instagram in late June that the next thing on her agenda after “Hot S***” was a tummy tuck. “I can’t wait to release this song and do more things so I can get the shit out and do my frigging surgery. I’m over it.” While “Hot S***” will be the perfect summer jam for most of us this summer, Cardi may find it a strengthening anthem of recovery.
