Selena Gomez’s career can be summed up in one word – productive. From her teenage heart and soul in Barney and Friends to starring in her latest project Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, she’s been in the spotlight. Outside of her acting, singing, and beauty careers, Gomez is guaranteed to make headlines dealing with her love life. Though she’s now proudly single, her most talked about relationship was with none other than Justin Bieber, with whom she spent eight intermittent years. But Bieber was far from their only high-profile romance; Gomez has also been linked to several other knockout gentlemen over the years.
Dating one of the world’s most well-known starlets comes with its fair share of publicity, so it’s no surprise that Gomez’s exes have taken it upon themselves to open up about their relationship with the public. From low-key affairs in her younger years to relationships well-documented by the paparazzi, here’s everything Selena Gomez’s exes had to say about them — the good and the bad.
Nick Jonas admitted he doesn’t want to get caught with Selena Gomez
As Selena Gomez’s Disney career soared to new heights thanks to her starring role in Wizards of Waverly Place, she also found herself snuggled up to boyband extraordinaire Nick Jonas. Gomez referred to her relationship with Jonas as “puppy love” in a 2015 interview with Capital FM, but her old flame apparently didn’t particularly like the public knowing they were seeing each other.
While appearing on an episode of The Radio 1 Breakfast Show Heart Rate Monitor, he got a surprise video from Gomez asking him if he remembered their Central Park date back then. Jonas immediately recalled their 2008 relationship where the paparazzi were on her back, which was a no-no for the Jonas Brother. “She [Gomez] was unhappy that my Central Park experience was ruined by my being about 20 feet from her. Even though they were taking pictures of us and we were obviously there together, I thought, ‘It would be better if we stood about 25 feet apart.’” At least when Jonas gave her the cold shoulder, she was able to walk alongside Taylor Swift, like Swift was also dumped by her then-boyfriend Joe Jonas.
Justin Bieber has both praised and belittled his former flame
When Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were first linked, the Disney star insisted her relationship with him wasn’t romantic. “Oh bro, he’s short,” she told Ellen DeGeneres when asked how she made time to date Bieber amid her busy schedule. “No, no, he’s like my little brother. That strikes me as odd.” Her feelings apparently changed quickly, however, as the infatuation was real when the two first went public in 2011. In fact, Bieber even suggested that Gomez would be the mother of his future children. “I really would like to be a young dad,” he told New! Magazine (via HuffPost). “Selena loves kids, she’s really great with them.”
However, when Bieber didn’t plan a future with Gomez, the depths of their relationship were messy, to say the least. Even as they dated other people throughout their multiple breakups, they still couldn’t stop talking about each other. In a 2015 interview with Complex, Bieber said he’ll always compare his new relationships to Gomez — but not for the best of reasons. “I kind of see this girl, don’t I? I’m shy about doing or saying certain things, and then I say it and it’s not even a problem. And I’ll remember when I couldn’t. …You’re just scarred and you’re not doing anything because in your last relationship they would freak out though [the new person is] just like, ‘What are you talking about?’” he explained.
Zedd said that dating Selena Gomez changed his life
In 2015, when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez momentarily parted ways, Gomez found solace in Zedd, a DJ and music producer. At first it seemed like they were just making music together, but after Zedd posted a picture of Gomez in bed with the caption, “Oh hi derrling [sic],” (via Kapital FM) The world quickly realized that there was — more than likely — more going on between the two behind the scenes.
Little did Zedd realize, however, that dating one of the world’s most notorious celebrities doesn’t exactly allow for much privacy. “She’s one of the most talked about people in the world, but I had no idea how much that would change my life,” he told Billboard. He even recalled reporters calling his parents and people hacking into his friends’ phones for more information about the couple. “I was angry,” he said. The couple never spoke about their relationship as it unfolded in interviews, but Gomez confirmed they were an article in The Edge Afternoons after the breakup. “I love Anton [Zedd] a lot and I definitely had something with him that was nice,” she revealed.
Samuel Krost defended Selena Gomez as real
Selena Gomez’s dating track record includes some high-profile names, but her post-Zedd relationship was with someone more reserved — specifically, a New York University student. The only time her alleged ex-boyfriend, Samuel Krost, appeared on TV screens was on FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, where he explained how he was tricked into booking talent for the infamous FYRE festival . Hard to imagine how he and Gomez would have crossed paths, but Gigi Hadid, who is good friends with Krost, introduced the two.
Krost and Gomez dated from late 2015 to early 2016. Fans got a glimpse of their relationship through Instagram posts from the couple and their circle of friends, including his posts from their crew in Costa Rica. In August 2016, Krost clearly had Gomez in mind when he recalled their relationship on Instagram. “Selena is a real girl with a real heart and real feelings,” he wrote in a now-deleted post (via Elle). “All you shallow ones who are just unsatisfied with your love life, understand that love is real. Though we’ve ventured our separate ways, at least I know love exists. I love you Sel.” He was even brave enough to tag Gomez in the comments. Though the two have been spotted together since their split, Gomez confirmed that she wasn’t dating him.
Charlie Puth says Selena Gomez is torn between men
Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez dominated the airwaves in the summer of 2016 with their duet “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” which peaked at number ninth on the Billboard Hot 100. A romance was building between them behind the scenes, but Puth said it didn’t last long. The former lovebirds were introduced by Taylor Swift at a VMAs after-party, leading them to meet up at Puth’s Hollywood Hills home at 2am during a recording session.
In an interview with Billboard, the “Light Switch” singer opened up about his time with Gomez before they fizzled out. “Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful,” he said of their relationship. “And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put that as best I can: it wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew I was walking in — which I was walking into,” he explained. If fans had to guess who else they were thinking of, it’s a solid guess that Bieber fever got in the way.
The Weeknd’s album spoke for itself
When Selena Gomez started dating The Weeknd, people thought maybe she’d finally moved away from Justin Bieber. Although they only lasted 10 months, their public appearances were full of affection. While The Weeknd never really spoke about Gomez while he was dating her, he apparently had a lot to say about their post-breakup breakup. Five months after their split, he canceled his project My Dear Melancholy, which was about his relationship between Gomez (and Bella Hadid). It’s hard not to see the connection to Gomez in his lyrics, with lines like “I almost cut off a piece of myself for your life/Guess I was just another pit stop/Until you made up your mind/You just wasting my time,” which people are thinking is a clue that he almost donated his kidney to Gomez. Gomez started hanging out with Bieber again the same month her split from The Weeknd was announced, so it’s no wonder he got emotional at Coachella while performing the song.
Fans didn’t just have to decipher lyrics to know his feelings towards Gomez. He spoke to Esquire about the EP more than two years after its release. “The reason why it was so short [the album] is like, I guess I just didn’t have anything else to say about it…whatever,” he began. “It was just like that cathartic work of art.” Gomez called The Weeknd her best friend after the breakup, but the two have been comfortable and haven’t been seen hanging out much since.
Justin Bieber finally admitted his wrongdoing in his relationship with Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez’s last contact with Justin Bieber in 2018 was her last publicly known relationship. The two reportedly ended in March 2018 when Bieber proposed to Hailey Baldwin in July 2018. With such a quick turn of events, the public began to turn against the pop star, and he took to Instagram to reflect in September 2019. I started doing pretty heavy drugs when I was 19 and abused all my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful of women and angry,” he admitted in a lengthy post, addressing how life as a child star was affecting him negatively. “It took me years to recover from all of these horrible decisions, to mend broken relationships, and to change relationship habits.”
Apparently, that introspection wasn’t enough for Gomez, who said, “I felt like I wasn’t getting a respectful degree” during a January 2020 interview with NPR. A month after interviewing Gomez, Bieber was ready to open up even more, and he touched on the causes of her downfall. “In my previous relationship, I bailed and just went crazy and wild, just reckless,” he told Zane Lowe and Apple Music. “[With Hailey Baldwin] I took the time to really build myself up and focus on myself and try to make the right decisions and all of that stuff. And yes, I got better.” For now, it’s safe to say that this may be the last time we’ll hear Jelena speak to each other.
