Alfonso Ribeiro has been officially named Tyra Banks’ new co-host on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ – but is there tension between the new co-stars?
News of Ribeiro’s casting first broke on Good Morning America, and it’s pretty clear the hosts were all in favor. Ginger Zee gushed: “Everybody loves Alfonso. Not only is he a fan of the show, he also won season 19.” Shortly after GMA’s announcement, a hilarious video of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air star and Banks promoting the new season was posted on the official DWTS Instagram account posted. “I love ‘Dancing with the Stars’ so much I asked for a front row seat this season,” Ribeiro shares, before the video streams to Banks, “Well guess Alfonso? You have it! And I can’t wait to see you in the ballroom.”
Banks also took to her own Instagram to share her excitement at having a new co-star and to remind fans that she and Ribeiro have worked together in the past. Alongside a still of the pair from an episode of Fresh Prince, the supermodel wrote, “I’m reconnecting with a very special person I worked with when I was just 19!” Banks also shared that she looking forward to having “crazy fun” with him. However, a more recent interview with Ribeiro himself has left fans wondering if the feeling is mutual.
Alfonso Ribeiro hints that Tyra Banks is no “fun”.
Speaking to Good Morning America after his casting was announced, Alfonso Ribeiro gushed about how excited he was about his new appearance on Dancing with the Stars. He’s also been open about his goals for the new role, and this is where things took a slightly shady turn.
“My goal is to bring the fun and the love and the energy and the…er, the laughs back to the ballroom.” Translation: There haven’t been enough of those the past few seasons. whoops. As “DWTS” fans will be well aware, rumors about Tyra Banks’ future have long been floating around the show. It’s no secret that the audience isn’t exactly in their corner. In the past, not only have they criticized Banks’ “DWTS” outfit choices, but according to Heavy, they’ve even gone so far as to boycott the show while she’s a host. It certainly didn’t help that Banks’ predecessor, Brooke Burke, accused her of being a “diva” (via Page Six).
There’s also always the possibility that Ribeiro didn’t mean it badly towards Banks. In fact, he shared in the same interview that he’s looking forward to working with her again. Ribeiro also revealed that her story went well beyond The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. “The part that most people don’t realize,” he said, “is that we actually went to middle school together.” Either way, we wouldn’t mind a dance battle between co-hosts, just in case there was tension are.
