Even though there hasn’t been a new cycle of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ since 2018, Tyra Banks still takes a lot of heat from both viewers and the show’s contestants.
Cycle 21 graduate Winnie Harlow, who is now a successful supermodel herself, told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in 2018 that her career didn’t really take off until after the show, insisting that “it doesn’t really do anything.” for any modeling career, realistically.” Angela Preston, who competed in Cycles 14 and 17, explained in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail that meeting Banks was nothing but a disappointment, explaining that the “life-size” -Actor never spoke to any of the contestants and is a “stranger” off camera.
However, this isn’t the only time Banks has made headlines on the reality show. As previously reported by Insider, she continues to face allegations of many things, including black-faced at her contestants and making problematic comments about people’s sexuality and body image. Acknowledging people’s outrage, Banks wrote in a now-deleted tweet that she recognizes “those were some really wrong decisions,” before sharing that she “appreciates.”[s] your honest feedback.”
Now that another vintage clip from the show is going viral, it seems Banks and her fellow judges are being slammed for body shaming.
Robin Manning was told she was ‘fat’ and ‘too old’
It seems Tyra Banks can’t take a break when it comes to America’s Next Top Model. After a TikTok user shared a compilation video from Cycle 1 that aired in 2003, Banks and a panel of judges are criticized for the way they spoke about contestant Robin Manning. As detailed in the video, Manning’s physique was labeled “plus-size” by Banks because her body was said to be heavier from the hips down.
During another clip, Manning cried after Banks asked why she wanted to cover up from the waist down. Panelist and fellow model Janice Dickinson made it clear from the start that she wasn’t after her, saying, “America’s Next Top Model is not a plus-size model.” In a later episode, Dickinson said Manning was too “fat” and “huge” to work as a model, while another person insisted she was “too old.”
Unsurprisingly, the vintage clip went viral and many people had something to say about the show’s treatment of the contestants. “Were you a kid in the early 2000s listening to Tyra Banks calling women who were 5’10 and 115 pounds plus tall? If so, you may be entitled to financial compensation,” said one user tweeted. “The 2000s were different. This woman’s body was disgusting,” another person shared. “Someone please make an ANTM documentary because Tyra and her little friends deserve to be dragged like Hector’s corpse,” a third user noticed. Banks or others associated with “ANTM” have yet to respond.
