Any fan of the Harry Potter films will remember the famous interactions between the evil Draco Malfoy and the three young protagonists: Harry, Ron and Hermione, played by Danielle Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson respectively. While warm feelings may not have been spared between the characters, the actors are another matter. In fact, many have speculated over the years about the dynamic between Watson and her male counterparts, most notably Tom Felton who played Draco.
In 2011, 10 years after the original film’s release, Watson even opened up about her feelings for her older co-star, telling Seventeen Magazine that she had “a huge crush” on him and that he was actually her “first crush.” She said that now, Felton “totally knows. We talked about it – we still laugh about it. We’re really good friends now.” When asked about those revelations, Felton kept a low profile at the time, obviously fidgeting nervously and responding with a stutter before landing on a polite “no” when asked if the feelings were mutual were based.
Though Felton may have tried to dodge the question over a decade ago, he’s now decided to share a bit more about how he felt about his female co-star, revealing she wasn’t the only one who felt sparks .
Tom Felton says Emma Watson was his secret love
In his new memoir, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard, Tom Felton discusses his early dynamic with fellow actress Emma Watson on the set of Harry Potter. While he wrote that he did in fact have a “secret love” for Watson, he made the caveat that this might not have been the kind of love fans had envisioned. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in love with Emma,” he wrote, “but I loved and admired her as a person in a way I couldn’t explain to anyone else…we were kindred spirits.” doesn’t mean that things never sparked between us. It definitely has, just at different times.”
Felton added that while he initially tried to shrug off rumors that the two might share romantic feelings, he couldn’t help but eventually acknowledge the truth. “I’ve denied loving her that much,” Felton wrote, “but the truth was different. My girlfriend at the time knew right away that there was something unspoken between us.”
In a previously leaked message for the Watson-penned memoir, she explained how she and Felton share a “special” kind of love that goes beyond any kind of sexual desire. “It’s one of the purest loves I can imagine,” Watson wrote, per Elle. “We’re soul mates and we’ve always had each other’s backs. I know we always will.”
