The View is about to make some big changes to its hosts

ABC’s talk show The View recently became America’s most popular daytime television show and one of the most influential. The New York Times, for example, called it America’s “must see political television show” in 2019. After exploding in popularity in the late 1990s, The View made headlines into the 2000s for its raw and candid coverage of politics and world affairs from a female perspective, largely because it represented ideologies of all stripes.

Though there are both liberal and conservative co-hosts throughout — which has kept the show from becoming an echo chamber — this on-set ideological divide has led to some legendary disputes and notable controversies between co-hosts and guests.

Meghan McCain was reportedly unhappy while hosting The View

While The View continues to draw generations of viewers, not all famous hosts have had such positive experiences on the eponymous talk show. Meghan McCain, for example – the youngest Conservative co-host – almost felt compelled to leave the show in 2021, with a source claiming the dynamic on set made her “miserable”.

However, McCain’s absence has meant a lack of a conservative perspective, which may be largely why ABC is reportedly announcing some big cast changes on The View. In light of McCain’s dramatic departure from “The View” after four years as the show’s prominent conservative panelist, ABC is now looking for a new permanent conservative co-host to replace her, according to the New York Post.

ABC is targeting two female conservatives

As it stands now, there appear to be two prime candidates for the coveted position: Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former communications director for Donald Trump who has had a number of guest appearances on The View, and Tara Setmayer, an anti-Trump conservative , a frequent contributor to CNN and a multiple guest host on The View. Interestingly, Setmayer is also currently employed by ABC as she is a regular contributor to ABC News. According to sources via the Post, Griffin — who has since feuded with much of the right for denouncing the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and saying Trump should have resigned afterward — is likely the frontrunner.

As it stands now, the View’s current hosts are Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin — all fairly vocal leftists, with the exception of the more moderate Haines, who has described herself as a “slightly left-leaning moderate.” According to the Post, a source close to ABC believes an announcement of the show’s next co-host can be expected “before the season ends on August 5.”
