Wendy Williams has been candid about her relationship with ex-husband Kevin Hunter, whom she famously dragged onto her talk show after their split. Williams and Hunter finalized their divorce in 2019 after 21 years of marriage. Amid their split, Hunter was spotted with alleged lover Sharina Hudson while the talk show host battled substance abuse issues.
Williams and Hunter finalized their divorce in January 2020, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The former radio announcer opened up about her tumultuous marriage to Hunter in an interview with Insider, revealing that two years into their relationship, she found herself in trouble. “Kevin was a serial scammer. He cheated when I went out with him. He cheated when I married him,” she told the publication. “He cheated on me while I was in bed for the entire nine months of my pregnancy.”
And while Williams has been open about her marriage to Hunter, many fans might be surprised to learn that the talk show host was married long before.
Wendy Wendy was married in the early 1990s
Wendy Williams rose to fame as a prominent radio personality in New York City in the 1990s. Early in her big marketing career, Williams was romantically engaged to a man named Bert Girigorie. As revealed in her 2021 Lifetime documentary, Wendy Williams: What A Mess, the former shock jock married Girigorie in 1994, but the couple split after just five months together.
Girigorie, who describes himself as a sales and marketing professional, recently opened up about his brief marriage to Williams, which he says ended because of their “bizarre” behavior. “It was very bizarre. She just turned into a different person,” he told Radar Online in 2019. “I don’t know what was going on. I didn’t understand many things she did. I didn’t understand what her motivations were.”
Girigorie went on to explain that while he was unaware of Williams’ alleged drug use during their relationship, he suspected addiction may have caused many of the network’s actions. He also recalled an instance during their honeymoon when Williams demanded to spend a night alone, leading to a major argument between the couple. Their marriage ended a short time later.
Wendy Williams is still facing turmoil
In addition to her failed marriage to ex-husband Kevin Hunter, Wendy Williams has recently faced a number of personal hurdles. After being noticeably missed from her purple chair in the fall of 2021, it was announced that Williams would not be returning to the show The Wendy Williams for its final season. Williams’ rep cited complications from Graves’ disease and an ongoing thyroid condition.
Williams’ problems were further complicated after Wells Fargo froze her bank accounts. Per Variety, the financial institution believed Williams was an “incompetent person” and therefore unable to oversee her financial affairs. In response to the allegation, Williams’ attorney said in a statement, “Wendy wants the world to know that she is vigorously denying all allegations about her mental health and well-being.” However, a source later told The US Sun that Kevin Hunter Jr — Williams’ only child — charged nearly $100,000 to his mother’s American Express card, prompting action taken by Wells Fargo.
