The truth about Missy Elliott’s relationship with Alyson Stoner

Ever since Missy Elliott burst onto the scene as the “Supa Dupa Fly” rapper, she’s taken the world by storm. Not only does she rap, she also sings, dances, choreographs, acts and produces.

Elliott is considered a mentor to many people and has helped several other artists. In addition to her own material, she has written and produced for artists such as Aaliyah, Mel B, Tweet and Whitney Houston to name a few. In 2022, the “Pass That Dutch” hitmaker took to Twitter to offer some advice for artists potentially working on their second album. “Second albums are a very IMPORTANT time for artists! … Their second album is stressful, but it’s the BEST ALBUM to EXPERIMENT! Do not be afraid! Because if you play it safe you’re going to get wrapped up and it’s hard to get out because your fans are getting used to that one sound,” she wrote. In a follow-up tweet, Elliott shared further advice: “Listen CAREFULLY! Go with the songs you feel you should drop, not what everyone else is suggesting!… Go with your GUT!”

Many familiar faces appear in Elliott’s out-of-this-world music videos. The likes of Lil’ Kim, Timbaland, Total and Da Brat were featured in their video for The Rain alone. While these stars were already making their mark, some of their other videos introduced us to new talent, including Alyson Stoner.

Alyson Stoner starred in several Missy Elliott videos

While many may have first drawn attention to Alyson Stoner for her acting roles in Cheaper By The Dozen, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and Camp Rock, she actually landed one of her first major gigs by appearing as a dancer in 2002 Missy Elliott’s video for “Work It” performed. Stoner was in attendance that night and accepted the award with the rap star on stage. During an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Stoner said it was “very exciting” to be a part of this win.

Clearly impressed by Stoner’s natural talent, Elliott invited the rising star to star in two more of her videos: Gossip Folks and I’m Really Hot. In 2015, Stoner paid tribute to Elliott by teaming up with a group of dancers to perform killer choreography to the three songs above. At the end of the set, Stoner dedicated the video to Elliott and thanked the “Get Ur Freak On” hitmaker for the opportunities she gave her as a child. In response, Elliott tweeted, “I’m so humbled! To be honest, I never knew how many appreciate my music, but I’m grateful. Thanks @Alyson 4, what a lovely tribute.”

Alyson Stoner’s tribute to Missy Elliott at the VMAs was epic

In 2019, Missy Elliott deservedly won the Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In addition to accepting her trophy, Elliott performed a rare set consisting of a medley of her greatest hits. When it came time for “Work It,” Alyson Stoner made a surprise appearance in a bright yellow tracksuit (pictured above), sending fans feeling nostalgic. It may have been a long time since part of the public saw her dance, but her moves were sicker than ever. The moment was huge not only for the viewers at home, but also for Halsey in the audience, who was caught by Stan Cam and freaked out.

After making headlines, TMZ spoke to Stoner about her stunning performance and admitted she was asked to perform for Elliott at the very last minute. When asked how much she credits Elliott for launching her career, Stoner explained that “the moment will forever be bigger than anything I could have understood as a 9-year-old.” She continued, “To this day, the warmth of her hugs and her example as a person and as an artist makes me feel like I can’t give her enough credit.”
