The truth about Jensen Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s friendship

Way back in 2005, “Supernatural” aired its debut season to positive reviews on The WB. In the series, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester hunt monsters while searching for their missing father. As pretty much anyone with internet access knows, the show ran for 15 seasons. Consequently, its cast formed strong bonds over the years. Lead actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have a bromance for the ages.

“He’s my brother — he’s been for many years and he always will be no matter what,” Padalecki said of Ackle’s New York Times. According to Ackles, that brotherly love is mutual. The two had a unique relationship after spending so much screen time side by side. After the show wrapped, Ackles told ET, “The only goodbye Jared and I had to deal with was saying goodbye to the Winchester brothers, and it really felt.”

However, Ackles has an even closer friendship with another costar: Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The latter played John Winchester, the protagonists’ father. His character was a fan favorite, and it turned out he was popular with the cast as well.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jensen Ackles got matching ink

Although Jeffrey Dean Morgan only appeared in a recurring capacity on “Supernatural,” he cemented himself as a memorable presence on and off screen. This is particularly evident in his longtime friendship with former co-star Jensen Ackles. The two got matching tattoos with fellow Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki in 2016. Per Page Six, they got matching ink at Morgan’s wedding to longtime love Hilarie Burton, though the tattoos themselves remain unknown.

However, Ackles and Morgan got matching tattoos again on a trip for Sophia Bush’s wedding. Tattoo artist Daniel Gulick revealed that “they came on a whim,” telling Us Weekly that Morgan got “a bunch” of tattoos, while Ackles only got the one matching design. “They drove scooters in, which was hilarious,” added Gulick. “It really was one of the most surreal experiences of my life.”

Aside from sharing tattoos, Ackles and Morgan have a lot in common — or at least their wives do.

Jensen Ackles introduced Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilarie Burton

While most people know that Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are a couple, not everyone knows that Jensen and Danneel Ackles are responsible for their relationship. In short, Morgan and Ackles co-starred on Supernatural while Danneel and Burton co-starred in One Tree Hill. Ackles met his wife in 2006 while filming Ten Inch Hero. The two began dating and about three years later they were the architects of Morgan and Burton’s relationship.

It all started when Jensen and Danneel took Morgan and Burton over for drinks one fateful night in 2009. Admittedly, the Ackles didn’t know how Morgan and Burton would get along. Still, the two shared an instant bond — one so strong that Burton would forgo a simple trip to France to pursue Morgan. In the years since, the pair welcomed children Augustus and George before tying the knot in 2019. Discussing her first meeting with People, Morgan revealed that Burton “jumped further.” [him] with a quickness,” although Burton claims she was “a lot cooler and more distant.”

Burton clarified that she “wasn’t a girl anyone was chasing,” per People. Though normally an “alpha,” Morgan’s “confidence was intoxicating.” No matter who was chasing whom, both fell quickly. So a 2000s kid’s dream was born — all thanks to Ackles.
