Jenna Fischer is perhaps one of the most underrated actresses in the entertainment industry. While perhaps best known for her role as Pam Beesly on The Office, she has also starred in a number of series over the years including Six Feet Under, That ’70s Show and more recently “The Guest”. Book” and “Breaking Up Together”.
But it seems like she’ll always be best known as the often shy but also quite smart Pam, who often tried to find calm in the chaos at Dunder Mifflin. Speaking to NPR about her character, Fischer recalled her audition and how she tried to be as boring as possible. She said: “I gave very short one-word answers. And I tried really hard not to be funny or clever because I thought the comedy would only come from real human reactions to the situation.”
And while many “The Office” fans seem to associate Pam Beesly with screen love of a lifetime, Jim Halpert (played by John Krasinki), fans know very little about Fischer’s real-life husband, Lee Kirk. In fact, their relationship sounds like one that Pam herself would approve of.
Jenna Fischer has found her Jim in Lee Kirk
In The Office, Pam Beesly lived her happy life with Jim Halpert. Off-screen, the character’s performer Jenna Fischer got a pretty sweet deal when she married Lee Kirk. Together they have two children, Weston and Harper Mae, and live relatively quiet lives away from the limelight. However, Fischer and Kirk worked together in the 2012 film The Giant Mechanical Man, in which Fischer starred.
As it turns out, Fischer was actually previously married to director James Gunn before meeting Kirk, according to People. In a 2011 interview with Redbook, Fischer admitted that she got the best advice on love from Paul Lieberstein, who also played Toby on The Office. She said Lieberstein told her, “Finding love isn’t as hard as choosing the right person to spend the rest of your life with,” adding, “I stuck to that advice as I searched.” I would start to fall in love with someone and think: But this doesn’t add up. The fluttering feelings are not enough.”
Luckily, Fischer got more than a flutter or two when she met Kirk, who also has an interesting connection to “The Office.”
Lee Kirk also appeared in The Office
What some fans don’t know is that Jenna Fischer’s real-life partner, Lee Kirk, actually made a cameo in The Office. According to Screen Rant, he played Pam Beesley’s lactation consultant in Season 6. In Episode 18, titled “The Delivery: Part 2,” Pam had just given birth to a healthy baby girl named Cece, but unfortunately she was struggling with the breastfeeding department. Kirk played the handy lactation consultant (he was just doing his job), yet made Pam’s husband Jim Halpert feel all sorts of awkward and weird feelings.
Fischer admitted on the Office Ladies podcast that if the guest star had been played by someone other than her husband, she would have felt differently about the scene. As she recalled, writers came up with the storyline, and it was Paul Lieberstein who took the idea of her through and said something along the lines of, “Hey, Jenna, we have this really fun idea, but it’s about a man who something like squeezing involves your breasts around. What do you think? As if that were a guest actor. Are you okay with that?” While Fischer thought things were going to be a little awkward, Lieberstein then offered, “Well, what if that person was your fiancee, Lee? What if Lee had done it?”
Thank god Michael Scott wasn’t there to offer his expertise on the matter at the time, was he? One can only imagine what he would have done or said.
