The truth about Emily Osment and Haley Joel Osment’s relationship

Haley Joel and Emily Osment are perhaps two of the most well-known siblings in Hollywood today. Haley Joel first gained international recognition and critical acclaim in 1999 for his portrayal of young medium Cole Sear in M. Night Shyamalan’s acclaimed psychological thriller The Sixth Sense. For that role, he became one of the youngest actors ever to be nominated for an Academy Award, at just 11 years old (he lost to Michael Caine, however).

For her part, Emily rose to fame shortly after her brother as a co-star on the iconic Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. In it she played Lilly Truscott, the best friend of Miley Cyrus’ Miley Stewart. For this, Emily received three Young Artist and two Teen Choice Award nominations. Like Cyrus – who Osment is friends with in real life – Osment also launched a music career, releasing an album called Fight or Flight in 2010.

Although both Emily and Haley Joel have launched successful careers in the entertainment industry, their paths have surprisingly little crossed their path. So what’s the status of their relationship? Are you still around?

Emily Osment recently celebrated her brother’s birthday

Both Haley Joel and Emily Osment were born in Los Angeles in 1988 and 1992, respectively, and are each other’s only siblings, according to Super Stars Bio. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise, especially given how they both grew up in the entertainment industry, that they’ve remained relatively close over the years.

Reflecting on his and his sister’s rise to fame, Haley Joel told The Guardian in 2020 that Emily had “a much more difficult road” to fame than he did, as her career was much more Disney Channel-focused; he, on the other hand, took on many more adult roles as a child actor. “This show,” he said, referring to “Hannah Montana,” “was aimed squarely at creating a mania in this age group. She had to deal with much weirder invasions of privacy because she couldn’t live a normal school life.” He added that these problems were “exacerbated” by the social media that was on the rise at the time (“Hannah Montana ran from 2006 to 2011). “I resisted until I was about 27,” joked Haley Joel of his own use of social media.

The strength of their relationship was also evident in April when Haley Joel celebrated his 34th birthday. Lute! News, Emily posted a selfie of the two wearing party hats to her Instagram story. She also wrote him a birthday message.

The two siblings shared a scene in The Kominsky Method

Though they’ve both been actors since the late ’90s — Emily’s first on-screen appearance was opposite Glenn Close and Christopher Walken in a 1999 Hallmark TV movie when she was just 7 — siblings Emily and Haley Joel Osment never had a common scene together on screen until recently. Finally, in Season 2 of Netflix’s The Kominsky Method, released in 2019, Haley Joel took on the recurring role of Robby, the estranged grandson of Alan Arkin’s character Norman Newlander. As a result, he and Emily, who already had a recurring role as Theresa, finally had their first screen moment together.

In 2022, both siblings were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for their work on the show. On the night of the February awards ceremony, the brother-sister duo spoke to E! Screen sharing news. “Emily has been on the show a lot longer than I have,” Haley said. “I was a late installment on the show so I was happy to be welcomed into the cast and it’s a great group of people to work with.”

Though The Kominsky Method hasn’t been renewed for a fourth season, given their youth and talent, fans will no doubt see more of the siblings at some point in the future. There is no doubt that the two young actors have many more roles ahead of them.
