Jeff Bridges is known for being a part of many Oscar-nominated films, but his only true distinction comes in the form of love. Bridges has walked many red carpets with his wife of almost five decades, Susan Geston, at his side. The couple met in 1975 and their love for each other has only grown with each passing day.
While Hollywood has seen many heartbreaking public breakups from celebrities, that has never been an issue for Bridges and Geston. The two actors met while Bridges was filming Rancho Deluxe, and the couple had three daughters. Even during Bridges’ difficult times with his health, his wife has always stood by his side.
In a letter from Bridges of Good Housekeeping, he wrote all about the couple not fully knowing each other but how it makes them stronger. Bridges shared, “But with every fight we come closer to realizing that ‘not knowing’ is what we have in common. We know we’re going through things and we’re going to have hard times, but we’ll do it together.” But despite the “not knowing” and the “tough times,” there was a point where their relationship almost didn’t materialize.
Susan Geston turned down Jeff Bridges’ original date
Although Jeff Bridges eventually fell in love, he had a hard time asking his now-wife, Susan Geston. In his letter for Good Housekeeping, the actor wrote about how infatuated he was with Geston when he spotted her filming a scene in Rancho Deluxe. Bridges told the magazine: “Not only was she beautiful, she had two black eyes and a recently broken nose (from a car accident, I later found out). Something about her beauty and disfigurement drew me in.”
The ‘The Big Lebowski’ actor shared that he decided to ask Geston the same day after he finished his work. But when he did, the actor didn’t get the response he was hoping for. Geston turned down the date with Bridges not once, but twice. Geston left the actor with some hope as she told him, “…it’s a small town; maybe we’ll meet again later.” The universe seemed to be on Bridge’s side as the two actually met and fell in love.
Over time, not only did Bridges realize that he had found the right man, but so did Geston. In fact, Bridges revealed to Today that a photographer on the set of Rancho Deluxe captured him and Geston’s first conversation together. The two would later receive copies of the picture, which they both keep in their wallets after all these years.
Geston stayed with Bridges through good times and bad
Ever since Jeff Bridges and Susan Geston got married, the couple has remained by each other’s sides non-stop. The two have been side by side for many red carpet moments and other lavish events. Both Bridges and Geston collectively supported each of their daughters as they grew into adults with diverse professional careers. More recently, however, Geston has had to assist Bridges through a serious health situation.
In 2020, the actor took to Instagram to reveal he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. The trouble didn’t end there, with Bridges sharing just a few months later that he had contracted COVID-19. He told E! News, “Chemo wipes out your immune system and by the time COVID hit me, I had nothing left.” Geston Bridges has never left his side during this difficult time and has taken the necessary steps to ensure the actor regains his health.
Geston revealed to People what she told doctors during this difficult time: “I said, ‘Save his life. No matter what you have to do.’” Bridges fought hard and eventually went into remission from his cancer. This is the power of true love!
