The Real Reason 13 is Taylor Swift’s lucky number

Celebrities are already pretty lucky people given their fame and fortune, but some of them still can’t help but embrace superstitious traditions. Some carry good luck charms at all times, while others admit to performing strange rituals to ward off bad juju.

Heidi Klum once admitted to having carried a bag of milk teeth around with her. Growing up, she said she didn’t experience the tradition of having a tooth fairy, so she carried them into adulthood. “I carry a little bag of my teeth with me,” she said in a 1998 interview with Jay Leno. “We don’t have a tooth fairy (in Germany), so I put it in a small bag. Small, big ones. These were those with wisdom. I don’t know if it’s lucky, it’s just a crazy thing I do. Kim Kardashian also confessed to having traditions, such as boarding a plane a certain foot first. “My family and I always step onto the court right foot first,” she told CR Fashion Book in August 2018 (via People). “Another superstition is that every time we hear an ambulance, we grab our hair. I also say a prayer that the person is okay.

There’s really nothing wrong with being a little superstitious, but in Taylor Swift’s case, what brings her good luck is what everyone else sees as bad luck: she loves the number 13.

Taylor Swift credits the number 13 with her accomplishments

Taylor Swift is borderline obsessed with the number 13, and it’s not just because she was born on December 13th. She started the tradition of writing the number 13 on her hand during shows, and when asked why she adores that particular number so much, Swift said that’s because it’s closely tied to many of her career milestones.

“I draw this on my hand before every show because 13 is my lucky number; for many reasons. It’s really weird,” she told MTV in 2009. “I was born on the 13th. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks. My first #1 song had a 13 second intro. Every time I’ve won an award, I’ve sat either in 13th place, in the 13th row, in the 13th section, or in row M, which is the 13th letter.” Most people think of the number 13 as something , which has to do with bad luck, but for the singer it’s all about positive experiences: “Basically, when a 13 shows up in my life, it’s a good thing.”

However, she doesn’t love it enough to get it tattooed on her body. In fact, Swift has quite an aversion to body ink. “I don’t think I could ever commit to anything permanent,” she told Taste of Country in 2012. “If I were to get something, it would be a 13, but I, uh … I don’t want to get a tattoo.” .”

Taylor Swift incorporates the number 13 into her work

Taylor Swift fans know the singer is notorious for dropping Easter eggs in, well… basically everything. Anyone interested in detective work will notice that to this day she often refers to the number 13 in teasers and songs.

For example, the 13th song on their album Red is titled “The Lucky One” which has a 13 second intro and the word “Lucky” is mentioned 13 times. In the meantime, her “…Ready for this?” Video had a not-so-subtle clue to the number, as 13 can be seen written in large numbers at frame 0:20. And in 2020, while teasing the album “evermore,” she said she was looking forward to it because it’s her 31st birthday to fans. “Ever since I was 13, I’ve looked forward to turning 31 because it’s my lucky backwards number,” she said at the time.

But perhaps her most notable reference to 13 came at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards when she wore a dress similar to that of the same event in 2009 — the night she was interrupted by Kanye West. She wore the sparkling dress 13 years after the infamous moment, and the stars aligned for her as she brought home the award for Music Video of the Year. She also announced the release of her latest album that same night. Talk about iconic!
