The one thing that hurt Tom Cruise the most about his divorces

Four decades into his career, Tom Cruise remains at the top of his game. His latest film, Top Gun: Maverick, has surpassed Avengers: Infinity War at the box office in terms of box office sales, grossing a whopping $683 million in North America alone, according to Variety. Many of Cruise’s films have also become cultural touchpoints, including Jerry Maguire, Interview with A Vampire, and of course the Mission: Impossible series.

Cruise is an undeniable superstar and a true legend by any definition of the word. Of course, many fans are particularly interested in his personal life, including his relationships. While he’s now low key and reportedly single, he’s been married three times to three different women: Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001, and Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012.

Each of Cruise’s marriages has been fascinating, to say the least. For example, Rogers was reportedly one of the reasons the actress joined Scientology since her father was one of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s original students, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, his subsequent marriages were arguably more controversial as both took place at the height of his popularity. And judging by what has been reported in the media, his breakup with Holmes has affected him the most.

Katie Holmes is said to have surprised Tom Cruise with the divorce

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ marriage was something many fans thought would never end. There was even a time when Cruise famously admitted his love for Holmes in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, with the actor hopping onto Oprah’s couch to everyone’s amazement. They married in 2006, just months after their daughter Suri was born, and when they announced their split in 2012, many scratched their heads. Apparently no one saw it coming — including Cruise.

In an interview with a German TV station in 2013, Cruise admitted to being caught off guard by the divorce. “I wasn’t expecting it,” he confessed at the time (via CBS News). “I’ve had an incredible amount of time to think about it,” he remarked. Much about the split has been kept under wraps, but it is widely speculated that this is due to Cruise’s involvement with Scientology. In his defamation lawsuit with Bauer Media, the actor appeared to support this claim when asked if one of the reasons for the split was his controversial religion. “Did she say that? That was one of the claims, yes,” he said (via Page Six).

Holmes also apparently had a calculated plan to break up with Cruise. With the help of her father, they planned a foolproof exit strategy that involved Holmes moving into a new apartment, changing numbers, and cutting communications with Cruise entirely, according to People. This left the actor stunned, according to a source. He “was a happy man and thought he had a happy life,” they told the outlet. “He keeps asking, ‘What’s going on?'”

Tom Cruise couldn’t see Suri after Katie Holmes’ divorce

When Katie Holmes was pregnant with Suri, Tom Cruise was so excited he bought an ultrasound machine so he could see her every day. And when she was born, they seemed to have a healthy relationship, but everything changed when he broke up with Holmes.

Cruise and Holmes reportedly worked out the details of their divorce in a record 11 days, with Holmes being awarded sole custody of Suri and Cruise’s 10-day visit a month. However, according to an insider, Cruise has not exercised his rights. In 2016, InTouch Weekly revealed that Cruise hadn’t seen his daughter in 1,000 days — or more than two years — as he claimed he was busy. “They used to skype and text, but that’s dropped drastically,” a source said. “He uses his film commitments as an excuse, but the truth is that with Suri, that doesn’t mean much anymore.” Apparently it was Scientology as well. “Tom eats, breathes and sleeps Scientology,” they added. “He broke up with Katie and then de facto with Suri because of her connection to Katie. He hasn’t seen her since she was 7 years old.”

But Cruise is adamant he will always prioritize Suri. “Things change and there are different arrangements, like any divorce where you work out schedules,” he said in a 2013 filing (via People). “It’s just different circumstances. That certainly doesn’t mean I left my daughter.”
