That’s how old Barbra Streisand was when she married James Brolin

Barbra Streisand and her husband James Brolin already knew what married life was like before they tied the knot in 1998. Both had walked the aisle before, with Streisand known to have been married to “Friends” actor Elliott Gould (the father of her son Jason Gould) from 1963 to 1971. What went wrong here, Elliott admitted to the Independent in 2019 that he struggled with Streisand’s work ethic as one of the biggest stars on the planet. “It was difficult being married to someone who was married to his success,” he shared, noting, “[we] went as far as we could together.” But even though Gould was Streisand’s only husband before Brolin, we know she was always a sucker for love. Among the other stars Streisand reportedly dated were Liam Neeson, Clint Eastwood and John Voight, according to Who’s Dated Who.

As for Brolin, he too had some experience in the spousal department, having been married twice before finding lasting love with the ‘Meet The Parents’ star. Brolin’s first marriage to Jane Cameron Agee was in 1966 and lasted until 1984, while his second attempt at sacred marriage was to Jan Smithers from 1986 to 1995.

So it’s safe to say that both Streisand and Brolin were a bit later in life when they finally tied the knot and finally found happiness. But how old were they actually?

Barbra Streisand married James Brolin later in life

Barbra Streisand married James Brolin at her home in Malibu at the age of 56. Her husband? He was two years older. The couple invited their loved ones — including John Travolta and his late wife Kelly Preston, as well as Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and their children from previous relationships — and exchanged their vows to mark the two-year anniversary of their first date, according to People. Streisand’s close friend Marilyn Bergman probably summed it up best when it came to her long wait for true love, saying immediately after their wedding, “In all the years that I’ve known Barbra, I’ve seen her happy, but always with a cloud. It was a clear blue sky this time.” How cute!

And it sounds like all of the life experience the couple had before has only made their marriage stronger. “I learned how to handle Barbra from my previous marriages and we were amazing,” Brolin told The Guardian in June, revealing that they laugh together whenever they hear any rumors of marital drama in the tabloids. He also shared how his previous romances helped him financially on HuffPost Live in 2015, and admitted he’d learned that having separate bank accounts is best. “This is my third marriage and I know the troubles marriage can bring, so I didn’t want any reason why I would ever have to be divorced or married again,” he explained.

Marriage Advice from Barbra Streisand and James Brolin

Decades of successful marriage qualifies Barbra Streisand and James Brolin to provide marriage advice, as getting married in their 50s and experience in that department clearly worked for them. Brolin celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary with Streisand in 2018, telling Entertainment Tonight, “This is my third time – my third marriage. I picked difficult situations the first two times, but I think you learn from everyone. I’m a person who believes if I’m wrong I’m learning, and if I’m right I’ve learned nothing.” He also shared that he’s a big advocate of therapy and lots of communication. Brolin spoke again in September about his marriage secrets, this time to People, sharing, “I think everyone needs to be a negotiator. Everyone needs to have patience and know when to take a walk.”

Streisand – who actually poked fun at Brolin on their first date – has also shared her best advice on making things work; Use those ears! “The secret is to listen carefully. I think to be a good actor you have to listen. To be a good person you have to listen. To be a good spouse, you have to listen to disagree,” she told Variety in 2021.
