Drag superstar Trixie Mattel has come a long way since we first met her in Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. After finishing 6th in her original season and subsequently being crowned the winner of RPDR All-Stars 3, Mattel’s entrepreneurial queen has sought blood in the business world. Between her three albums and her book with her “Drag Race” colleague Katya, Mattel rakes in! Her makeup brand, Trixie Cosmetics, has also been hugely successful since its launch in 2019, expanding to include selling everything from eye shadow to lipstick.
The Barbie lover’s latest and most ambitious venture is the purchase and renovation of an old, run-down motel in Palm Springs, California with her partner David Silver. The grand total, including renovations, was over $2.4 million, according to Out Magazine! Mattel told Logo that she wanted to create a unique stay for a younger crowd, since much of Palm Springs caters more to the older population (which makes up over 25% of residents). The entire remodel was captured by Discovery+ on Mattel’s own renovation show, Trixie Motel.
“Spoiler alert, this motel is the most beautiful place on earth,” Mattel gushed to Entertainment Tonight. So what is it like staying at the Trixie Motel and what is the price? Well, spoiler alert, it’s not cheap!
Rooms at the Trixie Motel start at $550 per night
Of course, Trixie Mattel had to ensure that her eponymous hotel was updated. Trixie Motel features a guests-only pool and seven uniquely themed rooms and suites to stay in. “With all seven rooms, we tried to make each experience special,” Mattel told Entertainment Tonight. “I want you to be able to pee in every bathroom and have a different experience.”
And it’s true – just one look at the photos on the website will transport you to the eclectic collection of colors and patterns. For regular rooms, there is the Queen of Hearts room, the space-themed Atomic Bombshell room, and the Malibu Barbara room. Staying in one of these rooms can cost anywhere from $550 to $750 per night, depending on the time of year. The Trixie Motel also requires guests to book a minimum of two nights for the price to add up. The suites — which include a kitchenette and more seating — are the Pink Flamingo, the Flower Power, the Yeehaw Cowgirl, and the Oh Honeymoon Suite. These can be as much as $850 per night.
You can probably guess why the prices are so high. In an interview with Logo, Mattel said much of the motel is vintage or completely custom; the wallpaper, the linens, the headboards, etc. But prices don’t seem to be holding back business, with many rooms selling out before they officially open for Labor Day weekend.
Trixie says it’s wonderful doing business with her boyfriend
As we mentioned, Trixie Mattel and her longtime friend, filmmaker David Silver, decided to take on this motel adventure together. The two started dating in 2016 after meeting on Tinder, and the rest is history. This isn’t the first time the couple has worked together, either; Silver was the producer of Mattel’s 2019 documentary Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts.
Mattel told Logo they came up with the idea for the Trixie Motel when the couple traveled to Palm Springs and realized there wasn’t a unique or non-“overpriced” place to stay. When the two found the property, they couldn’t turn down the opportunity of a lifetime. And with Discovery+ on board to do the Trixie Motel renovation show, there was no stopping them.
“People take a year to redecorate their living room and then they get divorced,” Mattel joked to Entertainment Tonight. “So in order for me and my partner to stay in love on TV and renovate an entire commercial property, we both had to freak out every day and then give each other permission to freak out when we did something crazy.” And what’s a friend for except someone to have to freak out with?
