Mindy Kaling reveals the thought-provoking parenting advice she received from BJ Novak

BJ Novak has some thought-provoking advice for Mindy Kaling about her parenting. The former couple first met on the set of NBC’s hit series The Office in 2004, where they worked as writers and later as co-stars, according to People. Kaling and Novak maintained an on-and-off relationship for more than three years, but decided in 2007 that they were better off as friends. “In real life, I think we essentially just grew up, and it became more of a transition,” Kaling said during an interview with Vulture. Novak has also spoken highly about their friendship. “We’re pretty much inseparable best friends ourselves with a lot of chemistry,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Though they have committed to just being friends, the pair have reached important milestones together. According to Us Weekly, the “The Morning Show” star welcomed her first child, a daughter named Katherine, in December 2017, which completely shocked fans. During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Kaling announced that she gave birth to a second child — a baby boy she named Spencer — in September 2020. “I’m telling it now for the first time. It feels so weird,” she told Colbert. “This is new for a lot of people.”

And while Kaling is a great mom, Novak shared a few motherhood tips.

BJ Novak advised Mindy Kaling to stop complimenting her daughter’s looks

Mindy Kaling opened up about growing up with insecurities about her appearance as a child during an interview on Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast. “I grew up as a dark-skinned Indian girl … with overweight glasses in Lily, a white Boston suburb,” she told Markle. “So I grew up feeling ugly and overweight all the time.” Kaling explained that she is doing her best to heal from her past trauma and give trust to her daughter Katherine. “I always tell her she’s beautiful,” the actor added. It’s gotten to the point where Kaling’s co-star and longtime friend BJ Novak has encouraged her to try a different method. “My friend BJ [Novak] It’s like, ‘You can give her other compliments.'” Though the comedian doesn’t appear to be planning to stop complimenting her daughter’s looks anytime soon, she appreciates Novak’s contribution.

For years, fans have speculated whether the director was the father of Kaling’s two children. While she has yet to confirm the identity of her children’s father, she doesn’t mind what people say. “He’s godfather to both my kids — and they have such a great relationship — and so far (the rumors haven’t) affected my happiness, it hasn’t affected my kids or BJ,” Kaling said during an interview with Marie Claire. “If that’s tingly for people, I’ll take it.”
