On November 12, 2021, the #FreeBritney movement celebrated the end of pop star Britney Spears’ conservatory. The “Toxic” singer has been in the conservatory since 2008 after shaving her head and hitting a paparazzi car. Her father, Jamie Spears, then took control of her life as he worried about the singer’s mental health. According to Rolling Stone, the singer called the experience “cruel” and “abusive.” Though the Mickey Mouse Club graduate was enjoying life when she was first spotted at the bar, she’s still locked in a legal battle.
Both Britney and her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, believe abuse and financial mismanagement took place during the conservatorship, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This has launched an investigation into Jamie and the two are determined to hold him accountable for his wrongdoing.
In June 2021, Britney revealed in court that she had no choice when it came to life decisions while in conservatory — from family planning to work commitments, per The New York Times. She also claimed in a documentary that audio bugs were secretly planted in her room. She made it clear that her father, who oversaw everything, should be investigated and jailed for abuse and invasion of privacy. But it seems important people in Britney’s life are siding with Jamie in the fight.
Kevin Federline Says Jamie ‘Saved’ Britney
Singer and former dancer Kevin Federline spoke to 60 Minutes Australia on September 4 about his ex-wife Britney Spears’ conservatory. “All I know is that you have a family that is worried about their daughter and is trying to do whatever it takes to help her,” he told the news show. He said that he believes his sons — who he shares with Spears — would have a full-family relationship, and mentioned that he felt Spears’ father “100 percent … saved her back then.”
After the interview was published, fans of the “Gimme More” singer clapped back at Federline’s comments. One fan mentioned that the pop star’s ex-husband was “just an idiot looking for a payday,” while another called him a “garbage man.” One Twitter user even lamented, “I can’t believe Kevin Federline is being paid millions by all these media companies to interview untruths about a woman he hasn’t been married to in over 15 years.”
Britney has also taken issue with the statements made by her former family, particularly her son Jayden. “You were just like my other family,” she reportedly told her son (via the Mirror). “You secretly loved looking at me like there was something wrong with me.” She questioned the reason her son wasn’t on her side, adding that Jamie was responsible for what he had done to her , should be in prison.
