Jesse Tyler Ferguson wasn’t Sarah Hyland’s first choice to celebrate her wedding

You probably know by now that the Modern Family gang had a reunion of epic proportions when Sarah Hyland married Bachelor Nation grad Wells Adams on Aug. 20. Many of Hyland’s former co-stars were in attendance to celebrate, including Sofia Vergara (who was without her husband, Joe Manganiello), Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who actually hosted the entire ceremony for his on-screen -Niece headed. The gang also shared plenty of sweet photos from the ceremony, including Vergara, who posted many snaps to Instagram with her former co-stars from the hit ABC sitcom.

However, it turns out that Tyler Ferguson actually got a very important role on the big day – official! “I had the best seat in the house for this stunning wedding. What an honor to marry my two dear friends @sarahhyland & @wellsadams,” Tyler Ferguson wrote on Instagram alongside a stunning photo from the ceremony. “I couldn’t be happier because you love bugs. I also do bar mitzvahs,” he teased. But it was actually another “Modern Family” star the happy couple originally had on their hearts to celebrate their big day.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson filled in for another ‘Modern Family’ star

You may have noticed that Sarah Hyland’s on-screen father, Ty Burrell, was one of the “Modern Family” stars who missed her and Adam’s wedding. It turns out that Burrell was actually the first to get the big role of civil servant (sorry, Jesse Tyler Ferguson) but had to retire from the very important duty due to a family emergency. Tyler Ferguson revealed that tidbit to Entertainment Tonight, explaining, “Well, I got a call 12 days before the wedding and that’s why Ty wasn’t there, he had things going on.” He shared that he met his brother-in-law on screen by one for a little advice on what to say, and not too sad that he wasn’t exactly the couple’s first choice. “I’m honored to do it. I’m very fortunate to have Ty Burrell as an understudy,” he said. Awww!

It’s not clear what exactly Burrell’s family emergency was, though the cast touched on him missing the big day on Instagram on Aug. 29 in a cute group shot. Sharing the stunning cast photo, which also featured producers Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, Tyler Ferguson wrote: “Mini fam reunion celebrating @sarahhyland & @wellsadams. There are a few missing but so happy to see you all again. Ily.” Aside from Burrell, other castmates who couldn’t make the big day included Eric Stonestreet, Ed O’Neil and Rico Rodriguez.
