James Van Der Beek has had a tough few years.
In August 2022, the “Dawson’s Creek” alum opened up about the struggles his family has faced in recent years, including two pregnancy losses. “Picture #1, we had just lost a baby at 18 weeks pregnant and almost lost @vanderkimberly in the process. I had a collaboration that quickly went south to win,” the actor wrote in an Instagram post, referencing his appearance on 2019’s Dancing With the Stars. Van Der Beek went on to share that his family decided to rent an RV to start their “presence” process. and achieve acceptance. Unfortunately, they had experienced another late pregnancy loss. Two and a half years later — after a certain project was “completely blown up” and shortly after they moved to Texas from Los Angeles — the Van Der Beeks surprisingly welcomed a sixth child, a boy.
Van Der Beek concluded his reflective contribution with an encouraging remark. “Healing comes at its own pace. Presence might just be a requirement,” he wrote. He didn’t specify what “project” he was referring to at the time – but now we may have an idea of what it was.
James Van Der Beek is suing SiriusXM after a failed podcast deal
There’s a good chance that the failed project James Van Der Beek talked about in his Instagram post involves his failed deal with SiriusXM. The actor has sued the broadcaster and Stitcher for breach of contract over a $700,000 podcast deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In the lawsuit, filed on Aug. 26, 2022, Van Der Beek claimed he struck a deal with the two companies to host a weekly podcast in exchange for at least $700,000 and a 50% share of the net advertising revenue. He was also reportedly promised a production budget of $153,000 and a marketing budget of $50,000. But after months of back-and-forth, SiriusXM backed out of the deal after they “were ready to officially call the terms closed.” During that time, Van Der Beek had reportedly already turned down other offers so he could “devote his full time and attention to creating the podcast” (via Entertainment Weekly). He is now seeking $700,000 in damages plus attorneys’ fees.
The podcast could have been the ideal project for Van Der Beek as he previously said he was looking for a job that would allow him to be the best husband and father. “I’ve just been trying to arrange things so that I can spend most of my time with my family,” Van Der Beek told Fox News in June 2022. “I wrote and developed. I actually feel a call to work with some really brilliant people and get back into acting. I will see.”
