James Caan’s advice to Miles Teller is now absolutely heartbreaking

On July 7th, Hollywood was rocked by the news of the tragic death of The Godfather actor James Caan, whose death at the age of 82 was announced by his family on his official Twitter account. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the tweet read. “The family appreciates the love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy at this difficult time. End of tweet.”

Fellow actors, colleagues and fans of the “Mickey Blue Eyes” star have flooded social media with tributes. Everyone from Adam Sandler, Rob Reiner, Gary Sinise, Jennifer Tilley and Zooey Deschanel praised the “Misery” star for his kindness, dedication to his craft and zest for life, according to People. Even Barbra Streisand tweeted a throwback photo of them from the 1970s, writing, “So sorry to hear from Jimmy. He was so talented.”

Now we learn just how kind this old Hollywood stalwart was to up-and-coming actors in the biz, through a direct message he sent to none other than Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller.

James Caan praised Miles Teller’s acting

“Whiplash” star Miles Teller shares an incredibly private and moving message sent to him on Twitter a few years ago by the late great James Caan to support his career. Teller shared a screenshot of a DM Caan sent him in 2020 which read, “Hey mate just wanted to say great job with everything. i enjoy your work Never loose [sic] the passion and remain authentic. Much luck.”

Teller captioned the picture, “I will cherish this message for the rest of my days.” The “Divergent” star received praise for his tribute to Caan and even liked a tweet from fellow actor Rick Otto, who Caan’s tweet style with the “end of tweet” reply! It’s not entirely clear from Caan’s DM which of Teller’s projects prompted him to come forward, but Teller recently starred in the Paramount+ show The Offer, a miniseries following the making of The Godfather in which Caan was famous. Teller played The Godfather producer Albert S. Ruddy.

Teller’s revelation follows renewed interest in a tweet Caan posted in honor of Ray Liotta, who passed away in May. “Not Ray,” lamented the “For The Boys” star on May 26. That tweet went viral, with some pointing out that the two stars are now in heaven making the best mob movie together. We’d like to think they do just that. end of tweet.
