Is The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants Cast Friends In Real Life?

Years pass, but you always remember your first real friends. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants revolved around four teenage girls, played by America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel, who kept in touch thanks to a pair of magically matching pants. The film spawned a sequel, with Bledel teasing a third chapter to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2018, which sadly hasn’t materialized (as of this writing!).

Fans would be happy about another part. The film – based on the book of the same name – was popular thanks to its themes of friendship and coming of age. Lively herself drew inspiration from previous friendships when filming the films. She told MovieWeb: “I have a girlfriend, my girlfriend Jessica who I’ve had since I was 3 years old and my girlfriend Brittany who I’ve had since I was seventh grade and we fight like no tomorrow can have these crazy times.”

But the question remains, are the actors really friends in real life? “We all hated each other,” Tamblyn also told MovieWeb. She was joking, of course. Although the last sequel was released in 2008, time has never driven a wedge between the Sisterhood crew. Tamblyn continued, “We became incredibly good friends while we were up there [Vancouver]. Really, really close friends, fast, which is interesting because that’s what the film needed, but it just kind of worked that way.” So, has anything changed?

The cast of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants keep in touch

So it seems that those pants might have been magic after all. Because the cast of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants remain friends, even after life and careers separated them. The cast have always been there for one another through life’s big milestones like a surprise bachelorette party. In an interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, America Ferrera described how she was surprised by her co-stars. And of course it was under the motto “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”.

Ferrera told the talk show host, “Once they surprised me with a bachelorette party that I didn’t want. But they took me to a restaurant and of course there was something like a pair of jeans and handicrafts in each of our homes. That evening, restaurant-goers were treated to seeing “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Trousers” decorating jeans.”

Of course, Ferrera’s co-stars were there for her when she got pregnant, too. In an interview with People (via Onesie), Ferrera couldn’t believe how much her life has changed since they first starred in the films together. “They all said, ‘Get the drugs,'” she said. “We meet up with the kids, it still blows my mind… Blake was 16, I think I had just turned 20 when I met her. I couldn’t even go to a bar… And now we’re moms.”

The cast keeps coming together over the years

The cast of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants don’t just come together for milestones and the big moments, though. The four stars have found plenty of reasons to see each other over the years. One only has to look at their Instagram accounts to see the love and support they have for one another. Take International Women’s Day 2019 for example. Amber Tamblyn shared an Instagram post of the four reunions.

In the post, she wrote, “Saying salute to the women I’ve been through hell and back with. The women I’ve held and the women who have held me both literally and metaphorically.” The two also came back together for a photo in 2021 and showed their goofy side on Instagram. Even when all four can’t get together, the stars sometimes see each other individually, like when Tamblyn and America Ferrera came together to encourage voters in 2021 on Instagram.

Ferrera best summed up the group’s friendship in a 2013 interview with Entertainment Weekly. She said, “We were a part of each other’s lives in a really meaningful way that goes beyond shooting a movie together … We almost forget we did a movie together because our friendship grew out of so many other experiences.”
