Ireland Baldwin opens up about her past like never before

Following the US Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, many women across the country are facing severely restricted access to their previously constitutionally guaranteed reproductive services. According to the New York Times, 13 states have (or will soon) have enacted trigger laws banning virtually all abortions from the moment of conception, including some states that do not have a rape exemption. Several more are set to ban or restrict abortions in the coming months. The outlet reports that this will likely affect millions of women of childbearing age across the country.

As a result of this controversial ruling, many women feel the need to go public with their own experiences to promote the importance of reproductive freedom, particularly in states whose laws do not recognize it. One of those women was Ireland Baldwin, daughter of actors Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, who was sharing stories from her past on TikTok like never before.

Ireland Baldwin reveals her heartbreaking past

In light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, Ireland Baldwin took to TikTok on Sunday to reveal how the newly discovered abortion restrictions in many states may have affected her personally. In the video, Baldwin revealed that she was raped as a teenager and she did not tell anyone about the incident. Baldwin said that keeping this secret for many years caused her “a lot of pain”. She described, “I lost control of my life… I did just about anything to distract myself.” Although it didn’t make her pregnant, Baldwin said it would have been “traumatizing and impossible” if she was forced to give birth would.

Baldwin then revealed that later in her life she became pregnant with a boyfriend. However, she decided to have an abortion because her partner “hardly wanted to be in a serious relationship” and the couple were “very unhappy” together. Referring to her famous parents Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger’s messy divorce and seven-year custody battle, she explained that she “knows exactly how it feels to be born between two people who hate each other.” It would be morally wrong to introduce a child to such an environment, she concluded.

“Deciding to raise a baby without my own financial security, without a loving and supportive partner, that wasn’t going to work for me,” Baldwin said. “I chose myself and I would choose myself again.”
