In Sofia Vergara’s Relationship Story

Most people know Sofía Vergara for the role of Gloria on Modern Family, which she played for over a decade and more than 200 episodes. She realized early on in the show what a special performance it was. “I enjoy playing her so much. It’s the role of my life,” she told Parade in 2011. The series’ success propelled Vergara into the public eye, and fans around the world fell in love with her…which meant her personal life became a hot topic of discussion.

Celebrity gossip magazines are all about romance, relationship drama, fairy tale endings, and of course, rumors. Sofía Vergara has given the tabloids a little bit of everything. There have been unconfirmed reports of affairs with stars like Enrique Iglesias, Luis Miguel and Donal Logue. There was litigation. And there was love.

Relationships can be complicated, and even more so when everything you do is being picked apart by the public. However, this never stopped Vergara from pursuing happiness and eventually marrying the man of her dreams.

Sofía Vergara married her high school sweetheart

Some teenagers dream of marrying their high school significant other, starting a family together, and living happily ever after. Sofía Vergara did just that, but her happy ending only lasted a few years. Though her relationship with Joe Gonzalez didn’t last, their union resulted in a beautiful son and a friendship that will last a lifetime. Vergara was 18 when she first married and 19 when she became the mother of Manolo Gonzalez Vergara. “My high school sweetheart, the only one. We got married and had a son, Manolo,” she told Parade. To date, Vergara and Gonzalez have a loving parenthood that allows the two to live together and visit each other. “We’re still close friends. If José comes to the US, he’ll stay with me,” said the “Modern Family” actor.

Vergara and her young son moved to Miami from Colombia in 1994, and the future TV star made her a single mom. She told People in 2016, “I was very young when I divorced his father, so I raised him and tried to set the best example and give him the best I could.”

She has dated someone with mafia connections

Some failed relationships are filled with drama and disagreements. Others, like the case of Sofía Vergara and Chris Paciello, are fraught with murder charges, robbery, bail and prison terms. According to the New York Post, Vergara began a relationship with the Miami club owner when they met in the late ’90s, but around the turn of the millennium, their romance took a turn: Paciello, who had ties to the mob, was in the year on murder-and-robbery charges indicted in 2000. As the New York Times reported at the time, Vergara, who identified himself as his ex, attended his trial and even volunteered to help with his hefty bail. Paciello eventually served six years in prison. In addition, Vergara also addressed health issues in 2000. As she told Parade, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and received treatment.

Vergara and Paciello remained friends over the years. When Vergara and then-boyfriend Nick Loeb’s relationship ended (more on that later), a source claimed to the Daily Mail that the split was fueled by the actor’s continued contact with Paciello.

She got to know Craig David very well

The celebrity romance rumor mill never seems to take a break, but sometimes there’s some truth to said rumor. Which brings us to the whispers about Sofía Vergara and musician Craig David. In 2003, the future sitcom star was linked to the “Fill Me In” singer. Although they reportedly split after less than a year, it sure sounds like there’s no bad blood between the two.

When ET asked David years later about the rumored romance, he didn’t go into the specifics of their relationship, but said he and Vergara had spent some time together. “I think there are pictures that would show that we knew each other very, very well,” he said. “I mean, people say it’s dating. Some say they are friends. … I just remember one very beautiful soul taking care of her family.” He also expressed that he was thrilled to see her career take off the way she had.

According to Female First, David wished her well when it was revealed she had linked up with Tom Cruise. “She’s amazing and Tom is a lucky guy,” David reportedly said. “I would love it if they got married. We dated for a while but she was in LA trying to make it as an actress. I had traveled the world and we couldn’t have a lot of time together, so things didn’t work out.”

The audition of your life

In 2008, famed biographer Andrew Morton published Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, and the tome wasted no time in becoming a bestseller. Of course, the book drew a lot of attention for the whole Church of Scientology factor, but it’s worth noting that some lesser-known details about Tom Cruise’s love life have been sprinkled throughout. In it, Morton addressed the “Top Gun” star’s alleged relationship with Sofía Vergara. Well, Vergara and Cruise didn’t address this, and it’s worth remembering that the biography is unauthorized and many details have been questioned, so do whatever you want with all of that.

As Morton reported in the New York Post, Cruise and Vergara were reportedly founded by Will Smith. The two were eventually photographed together. Though they didn’t date long, Morton’s bio suggests things got serious pretty quickly. He wrote, “A friend told me, ‘She’s met his kids, there’s no doubt he auditioned her for the role of his wife.'” According to Morton, however, things apparently fizzled out because of Vergara’s involvement with the religious element had to fight. “It was made clear that if she took on the role, she would have to renounce her Catholic faith and convert to Scientology,” he wrote.

An engagement that ended in court

Sofía Vergara and businessman Nick Loeb were engaged for two years before announcing their split on WhoSay in 2014. According to People, the ‘Modern Family’ actor wrote, “Not that anyone should care, but to avoid giving the press a chance to make up some crazy and hurtful drama, I’d rather tell my fans personally that Nick and I did it to have [decided] Being separated.” Vergara and Loeb’s relationship, which began in 2010, went through some ups and downs; they briefly split just months before their engagement in 2012.

In the aforementioned breakup announcement, Vergara claimed everything was amicable. However, things drastically changed for the worse when Loeb sued Vergara over her frozen embryos. In an op-ed for The New York Times, Loeb said, “We signed a form stating that all embryos…can only be carried to term with the consent of both parties. The form does not specify – as required by California law – what would happen if we separated. I ask for annulment.”

But in 2021 the court ruled in favor of Vergara. NBC Los Angeles reported that, just as they agreed in their contract, each party needs written consent from the other person to use the embryos.

Sofia Vergara found her prince charming

After a short-lived marriage, a gangster, multiple alleged relationships, and an embryo fight, Sofía Vergara finally found her happy ending with actor Joe Manganiello. The couple started dating in 2014 and wasted no time in taking the next step. “Our first date was in June, and then I proposed to her on Christmas Eve; [we dated for] about six months,” Manganiello told Haute Living. “If you know, you know, and we knew right away — very quickly.”

At this point, we can’t imagine the two not being a couple. However, Vergara admitted to InStyle (via ET) that she had reservations about even giving the “True Blood” star a chance. “I didn’t want to go out with him for a long time because I thought he was too good looking. … I am 43 years old. I don’t want to deal with a guy that every girl is after, you know? But then I gave him a chance. I realized that he’s not like a typical handsome guy. He is not vain. He’s very serious, very direct, very easygoing. Fortunately for Vergara and Manganiello, the former’s assumptions about the latter were untenable.

After the couple decided to give him a chance, the couple married in Palm Beach in 2015, where Vergara wore Zuhair Murad. Living proof that happy endings come to those who don’t give up on love.
