Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore’s relationship once turned romantic

Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant have only worked together once, but their chemistry will never be forgotten. The two stars co-starred in the 2007 romantic comedy Music and Lyrics, in which Barrymore played a plant lady who was hired by Grant’s character, a beat-up singer, to write a song with him.

Although the actors aren’t particularly well known for their musical skills, they really shone in the film, largely thanks to their palpable chemistry and charm. They also enjoyed working together, and Barrymore said she jumped at the opportunity to star in a project alongside Grant. “I’ve always wanted to work with Hugh because I love his films. He’s so funny, and contrary to what he says about his intensity, I’m also all about making it the best I can,” she told MovieWeb in 2007. “He’s incredibly professional, punctual, and thoughtful about everything what he does.” Meanwhile, Grant was drawn to Barrymore’s enthusiastic nature. “[What] i love drew [is] The fact that she knows I am can be a bit of a gloomy bastard — I bring a bit of London gloom to the set, and she brings California sunshine, and she can take us all,” he told Reuters. “She takes me particularly with.”

Because Barrymore and Grant have natural chemistry, it can sometimes be hard to believe they were never romantically involved. But apparently they almost came down to a “bizarre” incident.

Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant once made out for 10 minutes

Once upon a time, during a drunken night, Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant admitted they had a hot smooch. But what’s funny, they didn’t discuss it until years later.

“I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it,” Barrymore recalled on an episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” for which Grant was the special guest. “I had had a few drinks and I walked in and bumped into you and instead of saying hello I grabbed your collar and started kissing you.” Grant admitted he actually remembered the incident and said his former co-star that she “never greeted me like this before.” He said that at the time he thought “I don’t hate this,” so he just let it happen. Barrymore added: “And then we were flirting and then we were like, ‘OK, yeah, bye! See you soon.'”

Grant went on to admit that it was “really bizarre.” He initially thought he was just going to say hello to Barrymore, but then “we make out for 10 minutes, and then I sit back down and [he and studio executives] go talk about the script.”

And while they both admit it was awkward, it helped them feel comfortable on screen. When MovieWeb asked in 2007 if they had bad moments on set where they got sick of each other, Barrymore simply said, “There’s nothing bad about me.”

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore first met through a letter

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore go way back. While they only worked together into the wee hours of the morning, Barrymore had already supported Grant even when he was embroiled in a 1995 cheating scandal.

On The Drew Barrymore Show, the Charlie’s Angels star asked Grant if he remembered how they met, and the actor recalled the time Barrymore kissed him during his Divine Brown scandal had written a letter. I was back in England with 5,000 members of the press around the confines of my farm and I opened a letter from you which was very supportive and kind. And it was very uplifting, and I was like, ‘I love Drew Barrymore.’ Words of support from an actress I didn’t know in Hollywood were lovely so you will always have a place in my heart,” he recalled. Barrymore then said that she felt compelled to write a letter because she knew how difficult it is to have your personal affairs covered in the media. “I just had to reach out to you,” she explained, “I just got you much appreciated and you were just the most charming person.”

When they finally met in person, Barrymore admitted to being disappointed. She said during an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show: “I was so upset because when I met him. Eventually, Grant came out of his shell, she added. “And then you fall in love with him for the real Hugh.”
