How Jamie Foxx made Cameron Diaz retire from acting

Cameron Diaz is ready to return to the big screen, a decision made after being encouraged by a co-star. After dominating Hollywood for years with roles in blockbusters like The Mask, There’s Something About Mary and the Shrek movies, Diaz publicly announced that she retired from acting in March 2018. This revelation was made during a chat with her “The Sweetest Thing” co-stars Selma Blair and Christina Applegate. After Applegate described herself as “semi-retired,” Diaz said she’s “actually retired,” per Entertainment Weekly.

In August 2021, the Charlie’s Angels star opened up about why she decided to retire while chatting with comedian Kevin Hart for his podcast Hart to Heart. “Just managing me as a person…Cameron Diaz is a machine. But for my personal, spiritual self, I realized that having a part of me that was functioning at a high level wasn’t enough,” Diaz said. In June 2022, it was announced that Diaz would return to acting with a film called Back in Action. Jamie Foxx, who previously starred with her in a movie reboot, will also appear in the film, and shared it via Twitter.

Since this news broke from Diaz’s next venture, Foxx has explained how his words led to her taking on the role.

Jamie Foxx had to be “very innovative” when he asked Cameron Diaz to retire

Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz are back together after Diaz’s hiatus from acting. The two previously teamed up as co-stars on the 2014 remake of Annie. Diaz then went on hiatus from acting for eight years and the pair will next star side by side in the upcoming Netflix movie Back in Action. Diaz spoke to CBS Mornings about what led to her return to the industry. “I miss aspects of acting or filmmaking,” Diaz said. “Yes, making films is a special skill that is fun to train and be a part of. But yes, it’s a different lifestyle. And you have to be willing to do that.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Foxx revealed letting Diaz know that shooting the film was going to be an enjoyable experience, which led to her saying yes to the role. The “Ray” star repeated what he said to Diaz, saying, “‘You want to have some fun? Just have some fun!'” before adding, “And I think that’s what made her do it.” Foxx also had to be “very innovative” to convince Diaz to act again, which included her dating Tom Brady, who is not retired himself, was on the phone. Foxx praised Diaz’s professional accomplishments, calling her “such an incredible force” that he “loves.”[s].”
