Everything Jinkx Monsoon has done since he won RuPaul’s Drag Race

Jinkx Monsoon, winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 5, is considered by many to be the queen of queens. From her comedic skills to her outstanding singing voice, Monsoon is as talented as it gets.

But when the world first met the Seattle-based queen in 2013, she was actually considered an outsider! That’s true, Monsoon wasn’t as polished and glamorous as its competitors back then, but it still had that raw star quality. She won over RuPaul with her jokes and even won the coveted Snatch Game episode for giving a hilarious little Eddie impression. When she finished in the last four alongside the three friends – Roxxxy Andrews, Alaska and Detox aka Rolaskatox – Jinkx had stacked the odds against her. But in the end, Monsoon’s charm and humor won the day.

“I can’t think of a more parallel Cinderella story,” Monsoon told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “[Before ‘Drag Race’] No one had ever asked me, “Can you be a glamorous, gorgeous beauty queen?”…Who knows where I’d be if I hadn’t been on “Drag Race” and got this kick in the butt to make it even better on the next level? Now that I have it, I love every moment of it.” So, what has the Season 5 winner been up to since her reign?

Jinkx Monsoon was a busy bee!

A simpler question might be what has Jinkx Monsoon NOT done since their season? Musically, Monsoon has released two albums that span all sorts of genres. Her first full-length album was 2014’s The Inevitable Album, which sounded very Broadway and blues inspired. Then, in 2018, Monsoon released The Ginger Snapped with her musical partner, an artist named Major Scales. The single from that project was “Cartoons and Vodka,” in which Monsoon sings about just wanting to watch cartoons and drink vodka. Genius!

Since her win in Season 5, Monsoon has been traveling the world performing for fans. She has performed in dozens of cabarets, musical revues and tours over the years. One of their most popular shows was their Christmas tour together with their RuPaul’s Drag Race colleague BenDeLaCreme called The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show. As of this writing, Monsoon and Major Scales are still touring Europe together.

As for her love life, Monsoon actually met her “extremely British” husband Michael Abbott in 2019 while she was touring the UK, according to Another. Unfortunately, while they were on long-distance calls in the beginning, the COVID lockdown prevented them from seeing each other in 2020. But then, according to The New York Times, the two married in their living room, as Abbott Monsoon could see after receiving a 90-day visit from the government. Not even COVID could tell them apart!

Jinkx is back in the All-Star races

The RuPaul’s Drag Race fanbase was basically spontaneously ignited when it was announced that RuPaul would finally be making the much-anticipated All Winners seasons of Drag Race come true. And what better winner could one bring back than Jinkx Monsoon?

Rather than RuPaul sending contestants home, winners will compete for Legendary Legend stars each episode, and the four winners with the most stars at the end of the contest will lip-synch for the crown. Monsoon is currently killing the competition with two proving to be deserved winners.

“One of the biggest lessons I learned the first time, whatever you do, whatever your aesthetic is … do it 100 percent,” Monsoon recalled to the Houston Chronicle. “Whatever the challenge, [I] find a way to fit it into me as an entertainer and artist so that I always stay real and authentic, even when it’s difficult.”
