Elon Musk reveals hanging out with Joe Rogan had some unexpected consequences

Elon Musk and Joe Rogan have certainly been friends over the years. The popular podcaster and UFC commentator was one of Musk’s most vocal supporters when his $44 billion Twitter buyout was announced in April (of course, we’ve since learned that Musk’s Twitter buyout is now less likely). According to the New York Post, in an April 26 episode of his Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he called Musk “a movie star-like superhero” and praised the mogul for allegedly keeping democratic principles alive.

To date, Musk has appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast three times. Its debut appearance in September 2018 remains the channel’s most-watched episode on YouTube, drawing a total of 54 million viewers. His second came in May 2020 and his third in February 2021 when Musk treated Rogan to a tale of a glaring mishap on the Tesla stage.

Musk not only shares headline-worthy anecdotes when he chats with Rogan, he makes them too. Case in point: It turns out her laid-back hang from 2018 Musk landed in some hot legal waters.

Musk was tested for drugs for a year after Rogan’s visit

On the Nelk Boys and John Shahidi’s “Full Send” podcast on Aug. 4, Elon Musk revealed that he received “a lot of backlash” for smoking weed on camera during his 2018 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast had received. Musk claimed he only took “one hit” and shared that the federal government still tested him for drugs for a full year “because it’s still illegal federally.”

Musk wasn’t the only casualty of his one move — “all of SpaceX,” as he described it, was affected by that one fateful interview clip. “Space X has contracts with the federal government, so our competitors were like, ‘Why aren’t you doing something? Look at him brazenly smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast,'” Musk explained, also noting that he’s into everything under the sun has been tested. Tesla’s stock price took a hit as a result, and to make matters worse, he had to make a concerted effort to convince his investors that he wasn’t struggling with drug use. “I don’t know how to smoke a joint,” Musk said, laughing.

Two years before the debacle, Musk made a casual joke about drug use when a Twitter user asked for advice on how to be productive without much sleep. “Large amounts of crack,” he joked. Luckily for Musk, that comment mostly stayed under the radar!
