Dua Lipa has always been vocal about the musicians who have inspired her. In 2017, “Break My Heart” hitmaker Clash revealed that Nelly Furtado’s “Whoa, Nelly!” had a massive impact on her childhood, while calling Pink’s “Missundaztood” a “firm favorite.” While these two pop megastars influenced Lipa’s career as a singer, she also took inspiration from Cher with her eye-catching style.
In 2018, Live Nation TV noted that Lipa honored Cher’s iconic Bobk Mackie-designed 1974 Met Gala look during a 2018 Deezer event in Paris. This wasn’t the first time she referenced the “Moonstruck” actor, either. On the 2021 Grammys red carpet, Lipa stunned in a jeweled dress with a thigh-high slit. As Harper’s Bazaar previously reported, the BRIT Award winner once again took inspiration from Cher. This time, she referenced her look at the 1974 Grammy Awards. In 1966, Cher released the single “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)”, taken from her second studio album, The Sonny Side of Chér. In 2017, Lipa covered her version of the song after becoming the face of a Patrizia Pepe ad campaign.
It’s pretty fair to say that Lipa appreciates Cher very much. That being said, the legend himself doesn’t seem thrilled with a recent comparison.
Is Dua Lipa this generation’s Cher?
Cher is once again making Twitter go wild. After a now-deleted tweet claimed the British singer was “our generation’s Cher” (via Daily Mail), another fan tweeted the post, writing, “So much truth in one tweet,” before tagging Cher’s username at the end . While we can assume it’s a busy mentions page, Cher still saw the tweet and responded. “How many years is in a generation?” replied the “If I Could Turn Back Time” hitmaker, adding a thinking face emoji.
Unsurprisingly, Cher’s shady tweet went unnoticed, with people reacting in a variety of ways. “I’ve never heard a single Cher song! Lol,” one user insisted. “You are the only Cher of all generations, they can be beautiful and talented but no one compares it, it’s like comparing candles and a supernova, you win,” shared another person. “Dua can’t compete with you lmao, you are the cher of EVERY generation!!” remarked a third fan. “A totally iconic response,” wrote a fourth person. Lipa has yet to respond to Cher’s tweet.
