Camilla Parker Bowles’ canceled appearance has sparked a stir amid the Queen’s health concerns

Queen Elizabeth’s reign is coming to an end. The monarch, who has ruled the Commonwealth for more than 70 years, was “placed under medical supervision” on Thursday. The news came after the Queen pulled out of a scheduled appearance on Wednesday, reportedly on the advice of doctors. Buckingham Palace released a statement confirming Elizabeth’s condition had not improved. “Following further examinations this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned about Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remain under medical supervision,” the statement read, per People. “The Queen stays comfortable and on Balmoral.”

With the Queen in hiding at Balmoral, her favorite Scottish retreat, royal fanatics have to guess what’s going on. The palace offered no information on what Queen Elizabeth was ill or how serious her condition was.

This isn’t the first time the Queen has taken a step back to take care of her health. In February, Queen Elizabeth contracted COVID and was placed under medical supervision, but still attended events virtually, according to ABC News. This time, however, seems different given the reaction of Queen Elizabeth’s close family – even those with whom she has a checkered past.

Camilla’s actions are cause for concern

It’s no news that Camilla Parker Bowles and Queen Elizabeth don’t get along. According to BBC News, Queen Elizabeth has long refused to meet Camilla out of anger that her “friendship” with Charles was destroying his marriage to Lady Diana and embarrassing the royal family. However, time heals most wounds and Camilla and the Queen have been spotted in public together many times in recent years. Still, we wouldn’t call them BFFs.

Understanding their frigid relationship gives new meaning to Camilla’s decision to rush to the Queen’s bedside after being placed under guard at Balmoral. Camilla even canceled an interview with Jenna Bush-Hager to join the Queen. During Thursday’s episode of Today, Bush-Hager explained that Charles and Camilla’s decision to cancel all scheduled events indicates the seriousness of the Queen’s condition, even if Buckingham Palace is reluctant to admit it. “They do not take these matters lightly. They had busy schedules with a lot of appointments,” she said. “We are thinking of this beloved Queen who was loved around the world, especially here in Scotland.”

Whatever the state of their relationship today, Camilla’s decision to cancel her events to be by the Queen’s side speaks to the respect she has for the monarch – even if the feeling hasn’t always been mutual. If the Queen is indeed in her final hours, it would mean big things for Camilla. In February, BBC News reported that Queen Elizabeth gave Camilla her blessing to officially become queen if Charles takes over after her death.
