Bruno Mars makes an unexpected decision about the Grammys

In the years that Bruno Mars released an album, he was usually considered the prom queen at the Grammy Awards. The singer-songwriter won his first Golden Gramophone for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance on his debut single “Just The Way You Are” at the Grammys in 2011. Over the course of his career, Mars has accumulated a whopping 31 nominations and 15 wins. At the 2018 awards ceremony, the music from the Mars album 24k Magic won all six categories for which it was nominated.

At the 2022 Grammy Awards, Silk Sonic – the musical duo consisting of Mars and Anderson .Paak – won four Grammys for their 2021 hit “Leave the Door Open”. Yes, only one track made it into the Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song categories. When Silk Sonic released the full length album An Evening with Silk Sonic, many critics predicted that Mars and .Paak would dominate the nominations for the upcoming 2023 Grammy Awards. Well, those predictions have been completely turned on their head following the recent Mars announcement.

Silk Sonic has retired from the Grammys

Viewers won’t see singers Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s shiny bobbed wigs at the 2023 Grammys. On October 13, Mars announced in an interview with Rolling Stone that Silk Sonic has decided not to consider “An Evening with Silk Sonic” for the Grammys. “We really put everything into this album, but Silk Sonic wants to say a dignified, humble, and most importantly sexual goodbye to submitting our album this year,” Mars told the publication. “We hope to celebrate a great year of music with everyone and join the party.” Mars added that Silk Sonic was grateful for the performance and for winning last year’s awards show. “We’d be crazy to ask for more,” he explained.

Now the world is asking: Why? The Grammy Awards have garnered more and more attention over the years. In 2021, the Recording Academy decided to rid its committee of secret voters after years of “accusations of manipulation, favoritism and racism,” according to the BBC. Overall, many people have come to the conclusion that the Grammys play no role in the grand scheme of enjoying music. Big artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj and others have also withdrawn their albums for similar reasons.

Although Mars’ statement makes it seem like Silk Sonic has stepped down out of respect for other artists, the reason for the surprise announcement is still unclear.
