When singer-songwriter Betty Who first heard the concept for reality series The One That Got Away, she knew there was something special about it. “There are so many dating shows out there and what really drew me in was the story element in this one,” she explained during an exclusive interview with our sister site The List.
The One That Got Away gets to the bottom of a single idea: what if the person you were meant to be with is someone you already know? Each episode, different people from the past of the six contestants from The Portal appear in hopes of sparking a spark with their former boyfriend.
Taking these would-be lovers through each stage was something entirely new for the Who, who had never hosted a television show before. “I watched a lot of reality TV,” she admitted. “I wanted to get an atmosphere from different hosts.”
There was also a certain reality host that she wanted to emulate on the show.
Betty Who investigated how Jeff Probst hosted Survivor
When it came to learning the basics of hosting reality TV, Betty Who constantly turned to one show to prepare: “Survivor.” “Jeff Probst is what I know,” the singer told The List. “It’s not a dating show, but Jeff Probst is one of my favorite hosts.”
It turns out that watching a survival series is a lot like watching a dating show — love can be brutal, after all. At least, that’s what Who wanted to emulate when he hosted “The One That Got Away.” “[Jeff Probst] not afraid to come in there and shake things up,” she told us.
Who is also pretty good at stirring the pot as the season progresses. Each episode, she appears at precisely when contestants least expect—and certainly don’t want to—meet their brand new match at The Portal.
In every episode, who knew exactly what she had to do. “I want to be as shady as Jeff Probst,” she laughed. “This is what I want.”
Season 1 of The One That Got Away is now available to stream exclusively on Prime Video.
